WHO WON THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
2017? WHY?

Setsuko Thurlow won the Nobel peace prize in 2017 after

creating the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear
weapons, raising awareness about the horrible
consequences of nuclear weapons and her efforts to
prohibit these weapons with a treaty.
WHO IS SETSUKO THURLOW?

Setsuko Thurlow is a Japanese nuclear disarmament activist. She is also one of

the people who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945.
At that time, Japan was at war with the United States, and she was just a 13
year old when the explosive went off. She saw a white flash from the window
and remembers floating in the air (while the building was collapsing) before
she lost consciousness. After some time, a soldier helped her to escape from
the building before it burnt down with the rest of her schoolmates except two
others.

Nowadays, 75 years after the bombing, Setsuko is a global activist, a 2017

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a social worker.
WHAT IS ENOLA GAY?

Enola Gay is the name of the bomber plane that became really
famous for dropping the first atomic bomb (named Little boy)
over Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. It was named after
Enola Gay Tibbets, Paul Tibbets’ (the pilot) mom. In addition, the
plane participated three days after in the second atomic attack in
Nagasaki. When the war came to an end, the Enola Gay came back
to the United States. In the song it mentions the bomb’s name
(Little boy). This was named after his mother because she used to
call him that way. The song talks about the situation at that time
with the Enola Gay.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER HISTORY?

History is important because it allows us to

learn about the past and the mistakes we have
made in order to don’t repeat the same
mistakes in the future. The last thing we want is
to have the same economic, social, military
crises again. One of the main reasons why it is
important to study history today is to
understand how the society we live in came
about.
COULD WE HAVE A WAR IN EUROPE?

It could happen but nowadays it wouldn’t

make a lot of sense because war always
causes economic and political problems for
example.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN UKRAINE?
That Russia threatens to invade it, it has many divisions on the border, also in 2014 Russia annexed Crimea, and there are
two unrecognized governments within Ukraine that want to unite with Russia, the Republic of Lugansk and the Republic
of Donetsk, they are states within Ukraine that they do not recognize the ukrainian government since in these republics
there are people of russian ethnicity and that is why they want to join russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin is threatening to invade Ukraine and has a lot of troops on the border. The
Russo-Ukrainian conflict began with the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. The president has repeatedly
denied that he intends to attack Ukraine, but according to his intelligence services, the US president believes that the
Russians are determined to invade Ukraine. An estimated 150,000 Russian troops are positioned near Ukraine's borders.
WHY IS RUSSIA TRIYING TO INVAIDE UKRAINE?

There are a lot of reasons for this. Russia wants its territories
back because a lot of years ago Ukraine belonged to the Russian
Empire and the Soviet Union.
Fears of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine have caused
tensions to escalate between Moscow and the West. On
Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin kicked off ballistic
and cruise missile exercises. According to a Kremlin spokesman,
the activities are nothing to be alarmed about.
WHAT ARE THE EU AND US GOING TO DO
ABOUT IT?

Both the US and the UK are supporting Ukraine with everything

they can. On the one hand, the US has increased its military help to
Ukraine. Joe Biden has authorised the delivery of another 350 million
dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine. On the other hand, eight EU
countries: Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia,
Slovakia and the Czech Republic have asked the European Union to try to
bring Ukraine's entry into the European bloc as soon as possible, thus
giving a sign of support to Ukraine in the midst of the war with Russia.
They have also used the European Peace Facility (EFSF) for the Ukrainian
troops. The fund is financed by the 27 member states and has a budget of
5 billion euros.
WHY IS NATO IMPORTANT IN THIS CONFLICT?

NATO's purpose is to guarantee

the freedom and security of its
members through political and
military means. This is essential
to prevent conflict between the
countries and ensure their safety.
However, in this case its
members are probably not going
to take part in a war with Russia.
