LESSON PLAN FOR ISLAMIC STUDIES

WEEK: One
DATE: 04th – 08thSeptember, 2023
CLASS: JSS 1
LESSON TITLE: Sūratul-Fātihah (Chapter One: The Opening)
SUBTITLE (IF ANY): Correct Recitation, English Translation and the Lessons
PERIOD: Double
DURATION: 80 Minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
i. translate the Sūrah into English
ii. discuss Sūratul-Fātihah.
iii. mention the lessons therein.
KEY VOCABULARY WORDS:
Sūrah: Chapter, Al-Fātihah: the Opening, Rabb: Lord, Sirāta: Path or Way,
Iyyaka Nacabudu: You alone we worship, Yawmud-Dīn: Day of Recompence,
Salawāt: Plural form of Salāt(Prayers)

BUILDING BACKGROUND/CONNECTION TO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
The students are asked to identify the most recited chapter of the Glorious Qur’ān,
explain why it is most recited, how many times a Muslim recites it a day on average.

CONTENT:
The Arabic Text and English Translation of the Chapter
Some Significances and Lessons of the Chapter
 Sūratul-Fātihah is the opening chapter of the Qur’ān
 It has seven verses including the BasmilLah (BismilLahi Rahman Rahīm)
 It is always recited by Muslims on Salawāt
 It is compulsory that it is to be recited on every Rakcah of Salāt
 It is recited to give praise and thank to Allah
 It tells us that Allah is the Creator and Sustainer of every creatures
 It remins us that only Allah must be worshipped and given praises to
 It explains that Allah is the only one to be asked for assistance
 It reminds us about the day of judgement and recompense
 It also explains to us the Allah is the King and Judge of the Last Day
 It is used to seek Allah’s guidance in every of our undertakings
 It explains that both the Christians and Jews have gone astray
 It is used to guide against being misled and go astray

LEARNING STRATEGIES & ACTIVITIES:


The teacher presents the lesson through the following activitiesby encouraging communication
and collaboration through the use of critical thinking and problem solving as well as leadership
and personal development skills in the students:
Activity 1: The teacher displays the key vocabulary words through flashcards and
allows the students to read and provide the meanings of the words
Activity 2: The students as a class, led by some of them recite the Arabic text/
transliteration of the chapter from their copies of Juz’-cAmma or chart
fixed on the board
Activity 3: They three groups, identify and discuss the three divisions of Sūratul-
Fātihah with the aid of Hadīth of Sahīhul-Muslim No 395 (i.e.“I have
divided prayer between myself and my servant…”)
Activity 4: They in pairs, brainstorm on the lessons in theSūrah.
Activity 5: They in pairs, brainstorm on the application of the lessons mentioned
above to Muslims’ daily lives.

ASSESSMENT (EVALUATION):
The teacher assesses the lesson through questioning such as:
i. Stste the meaning of ‘Al-Fatihah’ in English?
ii. How many verses does the Chapter have?
iii. Recite the first three verses of Suratul-Fatihah
iv. Can a Muslim perform Salāt without the Chapter? If not why?
v. What do we used this chapter for apart from reciting it on Salāt?
vi. What is the English translation of
vii. Idenify other lessons from this chapter.
WRAP UP (CONCLUSION)
The teacher wraps up by summarizing the lesson and correct the mistakes observed while
the students are being evaluated.
ASSIGNMENT:
The students are to list in Arabic text and English translation of the FIVE Pillars of Islam
before the next class in their notebooks.
