MEG 205 TUTORIAL 1 ~ FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS
(1) State the 3 Newton's laws of motion and show that the Ist law is merely a special
case of the 2nd law.
(2) Define a particle and a rigid body. Explain the conditions under which a large
object such as a large crate may be treated (a) as a particle (b) as a rigid body.
(3) Distinguish clearly between the mass and the weight of an object located on the
surface of the earth,
(4) State the Newton’s law of gravitation and show that the weight W of a body of
‘mass m on earth's surface is given by W = GMm/R? where G = gravitational constant,
M = mass of earth and R = of earth,
(5) Distinguish between a scalar and a vector quantity. Divide the following quanti
into 2 groups under scalar and vector stating the SI units and the dimensions of each
quantity: distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, time, force, weight,
mass, volume, area, density, pressure, stress, strain, momentum, moment, work,
energy, power, finite rotation ofa rigid body, infinitesmal rotation of a rigid body.
(6) State the followings: (a) the parallelogram law of vector addition (b) the triangle
law of vector addition (c) the polygon law of vector addition (d) the principle of
transmissibility.
(7) A line passes through the points (20, 16)m and (-1, -4)m. Determine the
perpendicular distance d from the line to the origin O of the coordinate system.
(VM3.16). Ans: 2.2068m
(8) A plane contains the vectors A and B. Determine the unit vector normal to the
plane when A and B are respectively (a) i +2j ~ 5k and 4i ~ 7) — 5k. (b) 31— 3) + 2k
and -2i + 6) — 4k. (VM3.17). Ans: (a) (-3i—j—K)VI1. (b) (Qi + 3kVVI3.
(9) Given the vectors P = 4i + 3j—2k,Q Sk and S=i+ 4) +3k, compute
the scalar products P.Q, P.S and Q.S (VM3.35). Ans: 18, 10 and 0.
(10) Given the vectors P = 3i -j +k, Q=4i + Qj ~2k and $=2i- 2) +2k.
Determine the value of Q, for which the 3 vectors are coplanar. (VM3.46).
Ans: Q, = 2.
