DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (25 points)

DIRECTION: Attempt the following five discussion questions. In attempting the questions, please
read them carefully and make sure you understand the facts before you begin answering. Your
answers should be legible and as concise as possible.

1. Motivation is one of the key behaviors that shape an individual’s actions.


In this view, select at least two theories each from the classical and
contemporary theories of motivation and properly explain their application
in an organizational setting.
2. Group behavior is one of the key variables that influence organizational
environment, behavior, and performance. Explain the type of teams in
organizations by giving examples and explain the stages involved in team
building process. Which one of the steps is the most important and equally
important one? Explain why.
3. Can you think of situations with which you are familiar that would have
benefited from more intergroup conflict? How could additional conflict
have improved the situation?
4. Informal groups exist in almost every form of organization. What types of
informal groups exist in your work place/organization? Why are students
motivated to belong to these informal groups?
5. You have just been hired as a brand manager of a company called XYZ PLC,
which is a large consumer products company. Your job mainly involves
encouraging the advertising/promotion and production groups to promote and
manufacture your product more effectively. These departments aren’t under
your direct authority, although company procedures indicate that they must
complete certain tasks requested by brand managers. Describe the sources
of power you can use to ensure that the advertising/promotion and
production departments will help you make and sell toothpaste more
effectively.
