In 1835 a man visited a doctor in Florence, Italy. He was filled with anxiety and exhausted from lack of
sleep.
He couldn’t eat, and he avoided his friends.
The doctor examined him and found that he was in prime physical condition.
Dr said listen you just need to have a good time, the dr told him about a circus in town and its star
performer, a clown named Grimaldi.
Night after night he had the people rolling in the aisles. “You must go and see him,” the doctor advised.
“Grimaldi is the world’s funniest man.
He’ll make you laugh and cure your sadness.”
“No,” replied the desperate man, “he can’t help me.. I am Grimaldi!

IOT, we read about a man, who was tormented by demons and could not be helped. But one encounter with Jesus
changed everything.

Text: LUKE 8:26-39 NKJV

Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.

And when He
stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long [b]

time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus,
he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son
of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit
to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with
chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.

Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?”
And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. 31
And they begged Him that He
would not command them to go out into the abyss.

Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would
permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33
Then the demons went out of the man and
entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned.

When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the
country. 35 Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man
from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind.
And they were afraid. 36 They also who had seen it told them by what means he who had been
demon-possessed was healed. 37 Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of

the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into

the boat and returned.

Now the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But
Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done
for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had
done for him.

TITLE: FROM TORMENT TO TESTIMONY

POINT 1: JESUS & DEMONS

1. Illustration: Doug who was an ex-drug addict, he shared his story a few nights ago on how Jesus set him
free.
‘The moment I put the needle in my arm, a demon entered body.”
A demon spirit that kept him addicted to this drug.

IOT: We read about a man with many demons.

V27 says a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did

he live in a house but in the tombs.

A. Demons have one intention only and it’s found in John 10:10
Jesus says: John 10:10 NKJV The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy

These demons destroyed this man’s life.

V29 For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he
broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.

Same way the devil and his demons want to destroy your life.
Keep you bound with spiritual chains.

B. Life is far more spiritual than you know it! There are demonic spirits wanting to take over your life, and
keep your bound/chained spiritually.
They want to gain control over your life.

Illustration: On Oct 31 1999, a full airplane took off from JFK international airport in New
York on a routine flight to Cairo, Egypt, Shortly after take off, the relief first officer waited for the pilot to
leave the cockpit; then he disengaged the autopilot.
He moved the throttle levers from cruise power to idle, cutting the engines.
The airplane began to pitch nose-downward and then descended into a freefall.
In the final moments of impact, the horrified pilot dash back to his seat and battled the copilot for control of
the plane.
The pilot pulled back on his controls, desperate to bring the nose of the boeing 767 up.
While the suicidal first officer pushed his own controls forward to keep the jet diving.
Egypt Airflight 990 crashed into the Atlantic ocean south of Nantucket,
Massachusetts. All 217 people aboard were killed.

The battle in that airliners cockpit it like the inner life of a person.
The demons are trying to hijack control over your life.

1. Eph 6:12 TLB says Ephesians 6:12 Living Bible 12

For we are not fighting against people made of
flesh and blood, but against persons without bodies—the evil rulers of the unseen world, those
mighty satanic beings and great evil princes of darkness who rule this world; and against huge
numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world.

2. Life is spiritual: Jesus went around healing the sick and delivering people from demons.
A. In Matt 17:14 Story about a boy being healed, Jesus said “This kind” this demon.. only comes out by
prayer and fasting.
B. In Luke 8:2 tells us Mary Magdeline had been healed of evil spirits & sicknesses, describes 7
demons came out of her.
C. Jesus speaks of demons In Matthew 12:43-45 NKJV “When an unclean spirit goes out of a

man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to
my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in
order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and
they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also
be with this wicked generation.”

 D. The devil and his demons do not want you to believe they are real.
No wonder many people are blind to what really is going on spiritually –
2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe

The devil wants your life to be destroyed.

They will come into your life when you open the door to witchcraft. Cult, idols.

People often get involved in the occult or demonic things because there is something there that
seems to work. But I want to tell you that is not “something at work”, but a “someone at work” – a
demonic spirit.

3. Maybe you’re here and your life has been destroyed by demons. Jesus wants to set you free.

4. A devil exposed is a devil defeated.

You have got to be honest with God today… What demon spirit has you bound…recognize the chains.
Maybe your chained to smoking, or betelnut, or homebrew, pornography whatever it is.
It has got you chained; you cannot live without it – that is a demon spirit that has you bound.

Jesus has the power to defeat any demon.

TB declares Demons were stripped of their power when Jesus died on the cross… in Colossians 2:15
New Living Translation15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed
[a]

them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

The story in the bible today is about Jesus’ love and power to deliver and restore anyone.

Isaiah prophesied Jesus would come and set people free..

Isaiah 61:1 “The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good
tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, and
the opening of the prison to those who are bound.

POINT 2: TRANSFORMATION & RESTORATION

When Jesus cast the demon out of the man, The bible describes in V35
found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in
his right mind.

Everyone noticed this man had been completely delivered, transformed.

2 Corinthians 5:17 New King James Version 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old
things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

This man had no life – he wore no clothes and was living among the dead.
But when Jesus cast out the demons, he was sitting with Jesus, clothed and in his right mind.

POINT 3: TESTIMONY

“Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way
and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Likewise, our experience of transformation and deliverance should not be kept to ourselves.
We are called to testify to Gods grace and share our story of redemption with others just as this man did.

So Jesus can bring Hope and Healing to everyone else.
