For a long time, hotels with distinctive architecture and design were avant-garde and tended to be very high priced. In the meantime, design hotels have progressed to become one of the tourism industry's great success stories. Those who have recently embarked on their first job after completing their studies, others who might have ventured to start up their own business, creative individuals and freelancers without access to a fat expense account—these persons are all looking beyond the standard chain hotels for something special and individualistic, they are looking for a place that will inspire them and give them ideas, and they need a hotel there that reflects its surroundings. The hotels presented are all affordable in that they offer an excellent price / per- formance ratio. While a limit of 200 euros has been set, the rates at many of them are far below that. These hotels are all reasonably priced because they have kept away from the dispensable, often superfluous gimmicks which drive up the rates at luxury hotels. Thus if a hotel guest is only paying 100 euros per night, 24 hour room service will not neces- sarily be available, there may well not be a free newspaper in the morn- ing and no doubt one will have to shine one’s own shoes. Hardly any cool prices hotels are located on the grand, magnificent bou- levards of the world’s metropolises; rather, they are to be found in small side streets. That fits in with the concept and can be more amusing and exciting. Many of the hotels presented here are an extension of the inter-- esting personalities of their owners, who implement their concepts and 8 Introduction ideas with impressive consistency and satisfy with aesthetically supe- rior solutions. Also, most of the very best things in life cannot be paid for with money. For example: the view of the raging Atlantic from a cliff through glass windows the height of the room, or a small shaded inner courtyard protected from the large, restless city or evening conversation at the fireplace with the owner who in his “other” life may have been an actor who performed on the large stages of this world.
