Expressing Preferences (Tercihleri Belirtme)

A. Prefer B. Would Rather
Genel anlamda tercih edilen şeylerden bahsederken kullanılan “Would rather…than…” (yeğlemek, tercih etmek)
“prefer…to…”
1. Prefer something to something else “Prefer” fiilinden farklı olarak “would rather” yapısı bir
Would rather do something
* I prefer paragliding to skydiving. (Bir şey yapmayı tercih etmek)
(Yamaç paraşütünü skydiving sporuna tercih ederim.) Spesifik bir durumda tercihimizi belirtirken kullanılır:
* I prefer team sports to individual sports. * I would rather go camping at weekends.
(Takım sporlarını bireysel sporlara tercih ederim.) (Hafta sonları kampa gitmeyi tercih ederim.)
* I would rather go trekking in this season.
2. Prefer doing something to doing something else (Bu mevsimde doğa yürüyüşüne gitmeyi tercih ederim.)
(Bir şey yapmayı başka bir şey yapmaya tercih etmek)
İki etkinlik, eylem veya spor arasından yapmayı tercih ettiğimizi 2. Would rather do something than do something else
Fiil aynı olduğu takdirde “than” sonrasında
fiile “–ing” eki getirilir: aynı fiilin tekrar kullanılmasına gerek yoktur:
* I prefer doing snowboarding to climbing a hill. * I would rather ride a bike than (ride) a motorcycle.
(Snowboarding sporu yapmayı bir tepeye tırmanmaya tercih ederim.) (Bisiklet sürmeyi, motosiklet sürmeye tercih ederim.)
* I prefer drinking coffee to drinking tea. * I would rather do risky sports than (do) safe sports.
(Kahve içmeyi çay içmeye tercih ederim.) (Riskli sporları yapmayı güvenli sporları yapmaya tercih ederim.)

Her iki yapı da birbirinin yerine kullanılabilir. Tercihlerimizi belirtirken hangi yapıyı kullanırsak kullanalım, ilk
belirttiğimiz-söylediğimiz aslında tercih ettiğimizdir:
• I prefer rafting to canoeing. (Raftingi kano sporuna tercih ederim; yani aslında rafting yapmak istiyorum.)
• I would rather go rafting than canoeing. (Raftingi kano sporuna yeğlerim; yani ben raftinge gitmeyi tercih ederim.)
Negatif cümlelerde ise durum tam tersinedir. Cümle sonunda belirttiğimiz esas istediğimizdir:
• I don’t prefer canoeing to rafting. (Kano sporunu raftinge tercih etmem; kanoyu tercih etmiyorum.)
• I would rather not go canoeing than rafting. (Kano sporuna gitmeyi raftinge gitmeye yeğlemem; yani kano
sporuna değil de raftinge gitmek istiyorum.)

C. Giving explanations and reasons (Açıklama ve Sebep Belirtme)

Tercihlerimizle ilgili açıklama veya sebep belirtirken “BECAUSE” yapısına ihtiyacımız vardır:
• I prefer going scuba-diving in the ocean because I love sea life.
(Tüplü dalışa gitmeyi tercih ederim çünkü deniz hayatını severim.)
• I prefer flying over Cappadocia to climbing a mountain because it is more exciting.
(Kapadokya üzerinde uçmayı dağa tırmanmaya tercih ederim çünkü daha heyecanlıdır.)
• I would rather watch the whales because it is so fascinating.
(Balinaları izlemeyi tercih ederim çünkü oldukça büyüleyicidir.)
• I would rather go rafting than (go) fishing because it is more amusing.
(Raftinge gitmeyi balık tutmaya tercih ederim çünkü daha eğlencelidir.)
• I prefer scuba diving to swimming because it is more entertaining.
(Tüplü dalış sporunu yüzmeye tercih ederim çünkü daha eğlencelidir.)

Talking About Experiences (Tecrübeler Hakkında Konuşma)

(Present Perfect Tense)

Bu zamanda ‘have/has + fiilin 3. halini’ kullanırız.

Must: Bir şeyin yapılması zorunlu olduğu hallerde kullanılır. Anlam olarak “should” yapısından daha güçlü ve
ciddi bir tavsiye verirken kullanılır. Cümleye “-meli, -malı” anlamı katmaktadır. ”Must” dan sonra her zaman fiilin
yalın hali kullanılır.
V You must be a responsible student. (Sorumlu bir öğrenci olmalısın.)
V We must help our parents at home. (Evde ebeveynlerimize yardım etmeliyiz.)
V Jack must finish his homework. (Jack ödevini bitirmeli/bitirmek zorunda.)

Have to/has to: “Must” ile çok yakın bir anlama sahiptir.
”Have to/ has to” kalıbının ardından fiil yalın halde kullanılır.
V You have to clean the bathroom. (Banyoyu temizlemek zorundasın.)
V We have to return the books on time. (Kitapları zamanında geri götürmek zorundayız.)
V He has to go to school on weekdays. (Hafta içi okula gitmek zorunda.)

Don’t/doesn’t have to: Hem “must” hem de “have to/has to” kalıplarının olumsuzu olarak kullanılır. Yapmak
zorunda olmadığımız görev ve işlerden bahsederken kullanılır. “Yapmak zorunda değilsin, yapsan da olur
yapmasan da” anlamında kullanılır.
V I don’t have to wash the dishes. (Bulaşıkları yıkamak zorunda değilim.)
V You don’t have to cook for dinner. (Akşam yemeği pişirmek zorunda değilsin.)
V Jenny doesn’t have to go to school on Saturday.

Must ve mustn’t arasındaki
anlam farkına dikkat edilmesi gerekir.
V The students mustn’t run in the corridor. (Öğrenciler koridorda koşmamalı.)

Hello, my name is Carol. In our house, I’m in charge of cooking dinner. My husband
works late, so I always do the shopping and cook. He is responsible for doing the grocery
shopping. We clean up the house together. On Saturdays, we vacuum the carpets, mop
the floors, and dust the shelves. We have a little garden in front of our house. In autumn,
Raymond sweeps the leaves. He likes watering the plants and gardening. Moreover, he
does laundry and hangs out the clothes. He is good at ironing, but he hates doing it. I do
the rest of the chores alone on weekdays. I prefer going out with him on Sundays, so I
always finish the chores before Sunday.

Hello, my name is Claudia. I’m fifteen years old. My brother and I always help our mom
because she works hard and feels tired after a long working day. My dad usually leaves
home earlier than us. He goes to the bakery and buys bread and bagels for us. I prepare
breakfast for my brother and mother. I usually help her set the table for dinner and my
brother takes out the garbage. We don’t do some tasks such as ironing, hanging out the
clothes, and cooking because they are not suitable for us. My mom and dad do most of
the chores at the weekend. We help them with easier tasks. For example, we make our
beds every morning and tidy our rooms. Sharing is caring.

Hi, my name is Jim. I live with my family. My parents do a lot of work at home. There
are some tasks I can do to help them. We can keep our home clean if we share the
household chores. I have some responsibilities at home. It is my duty to keep my room
clean and tidy. I take the garbage out after dinner every evening. I think dusting the
shelves is fun. I make my bed in the mornings, separate dirty clothes, and even do the
laundry. It is very easy to start the washing machine. Shortly, I am looking for ways to take
chores off their hands.
