Youth Diploma One focused on how to construct sessions using the Coerver® Coaching Session Planner. In Youth Diploma Two our focus is how we develop a positive attacking team style. Enjoy the course. Coerver® Coaching Co Founder Ono Cabs Alfred Galustian coerver’ The BOX/TRAPe2014: “The Coerver® Coaching Approach to developing a Team Style” Background In 1984 the first part of our Coerver® Mission Statement was: “To develop skilful, confident and creative players who: a) Can combine effectively with team mates Or b) Go it alone if they have to.” This acknowledged that our focus was on the individual player's contribution to the team effort and not just as an individualist, We believe results depend on individual and small group skills in attack and defence and Youth Diploma 2, “Coerver® Team Play’, is the natural evolution of that belief. Systems are normally referred to by numbers, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 etc., the common denominator being there are more players in defense than in attack and in some cases many more. In Coerver® we're interested in numbers too but only in so far as players are distributed around the field and especially numbers where the ball is. Parking the bus, passively surrendering ground to defend with two lines of 4 or 5 players in front of your own box, and a single player working alone in front of them is NOT Coerver® Team Play.. Coerver® teams do not passively surrender ground or allow opponents to freely pass, cross or shoot, they are actively challenged to do so wherever the ball is on the field. The key point for Coerver@ is that there is not a lone or even 2 attackers, The Coerver® system features 3 attackers and the other two lines featuring 3 or 4 players in them with the purpose of fairly dividing the workload. So 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 would be the Coerver® team system. Coerver® Coaching has always had an attacking philosophy and our System to develop this positive, attacking team style is called the Coerver® BOXITRAP. coer ver’ WHAT IS THE COERVER® COACHING BOX/TRAPo2014 The BOXITRAP is approximately 20/25 x 20/25yds or smaller anywhere on the field. The BOX is Coerver® Attack. The TRAP is Coerver® Defence. The BOX and TRAP are constantly forming and reforming, We believe it is how fast and efficiently teams form and reform that determines their effectiveness. The BOX immediately becomes the TRAP and vice versa on every turnover. The BOX/TRAP moves with the ball Phase #4: 3 v 2— Red Box / Blue Trap coeryer THE COERVER® COACHING BOX/TRAPe2014 COERVER® DEFENCE: We defend with the COERVER® TRAP. Individual TRAP defence is defined by Coerver® Coaching's 3P’s on losing possession. PRESS - Immediate. Sprint and brake. If possible the Player who has lost possession. PERSIST - Touch close. Bother. Bustle. Break opponent. POSSESS - Gain & Keep. Probe for attacking possibilities. In TEAM TRAP defence, on a turnover, the 1* Defender immediately presses in the BOX which is now the TRAP. The 1* Defender's action immediately triggers Team mates in the TRAP who immediately apply the 3P’s while team mates outside the BOX get tight. Our players are coached to know that getting the ball back is a GROUP effort with a shared responsibility and a shared reward, no exceptions. The first player to apply pressure gets as much credit as the 2nd, 3rd or 4th player who finally recovers the ball 3rd and 4th defenders may get the applause for collecting a loose ball but he/she along with his/her team mates are coached to know where the credit should go. Every player is coached to recognize that it's the individual and group 3P’s effort that lead to ball possession and team success. coer ver’ COACHING The COERVER® COACHING BOX/TRAP©2014 COERVER® ATTACK: We ATTACK with the COERVER® BOX. The BOX features individual and combination play to advance the ball and develop scoring chances. Just as the TRAP features the 3P’s, the BOX features all of the Coerver® Kid! 5"S" Skills, Speed, Strength, Spirit and Sense attributes. Our players learn how to combine with each other in small groups in : + Overlaps + 1-2s (Wall Passes) Take overs, Screen runs, Killer pass/Run OR Go it alone, using the Coerver® 1 v 1 Moves and finish themselves. Players outside the box support their BOX players. Every pass outside the BOX moves the BOX. So a long ball from a central defender to an outside flank player moves the BOX to the flank player who becomes the fulcrum of the BOX with supporting team mates populating and surrounding the BOX. ecoeryer’ COERVER® BOX/TRAP BENEFITS We believe the BOX/TRAP system provides many benefits: - It speeds up our game on both sides of the ball - It makes players physically stronger and more assertive - It makes players emotionally more resilient - It increases pressure on opponents - It builds team spirit and trust. - It makes Coerver® teams tough to play against and hard to beat. - It helps to win more games For these reasons and many more, we believe the positive, attacking BOXITRAP system is how Youth Football should be coached coerver ALL THE TOPICS IN OUR “BOX/TRAP CURRICULUM” REQUIRE A “COERVER MINDSET” coeryer’ A GLOSSARY OF KEY TERMS The Coerver® Mission (1984) — Our Goal To develop skilled, confident and creative players who can a) Combine effectively with team mates (Team Play) OR b) Go it alone if they have fo (1 v 1) The Coerver® Code The 5S qualities that are the goals for all Coerver® Players.
