DISORDERS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

The usual disorder of the nervous system that are functional in nature includes headache,
dizziness, and epilepsy.

 Vascular Disorders
 Are those associated with the circulatory system which include stroke and
hemorrhage in the brain. Infections such as meningitis cause inflammation of the
lining of the meninges.
 Structural Disorders
 Are injuries of the brain or spinal cord such as Bell’s palsy and carpal tunnel
syndrome, which are common to children nowadays, especially to those who
always engage themselves in playing computer games.
 Degenerative Disorders
 Include Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease which
are more common among elderly people.

 Meningitis
o Is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and
the spinal cord.
o A bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord
usually causes the swelling.
o Injuries, cancer, certain drugs and other types of infections can also cause
meningitis.
o It is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection.
