THE METHOD OF D VALUES (MUTO METHOD)

For the shear frames, it is assumed that beams are rigid in

flexure. Thus, lateral stiffness of a column is estimated as
given below:
EI = ∞

k EI = ∞ k

𝟏𝟐𝑬𝑰
k k 𝒌=
𝒉𝟑

However, if beams are not rigid in flexure (it is the real

behavior), effect of the stiffness of the beams connected to a
column on the lateral stiffness of the column should be
considered.
MUTO Method is used to estimate lateral stiffness of the
columns with considering the stiffness of the beams.

1- Assumptions
•Earthquake loads is applied to building on each floor level
•Slabs are rigid in-plane
•Material is linear elastic
•The building has no torsion

2- The procedure
Lateral stiffness of a column is given below in case of consideration of
stiffness of the beams:
𝟏𝟐𝑬𝑰
𝑫𝒊𝒋 = 𝟑 ∙ 𝒂

• i: storey number
• j: column number
• a: correction coefficient of MUTO Method

NOTE: At the end of the calculation, D is multiplied with 12E/h2 and

lateral stiffness of the column is estimated.
