Quality management principles are a set of fundamental beliefs, norms, rules, and values that are

accepted as true and can be used as a basis for quality management. Some of the common quality
management principles are customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach,
improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management.

There are many case studies of how companies have effectively implemented quality management
principles to improve their performance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Here are some
examples:

- **Toyota Corporation** used the **Kanban system** to create visibility for both the suppliers and
buyers and to limit the upsurge of excess inventory on the production line⁴. This system is based on
the principles of customer focus, process approach, and relationship management.

- **Alcoa Power and Propulsion** applied a **structured process management approach** across
the business unit to reduce scrap, save costs, and increase on-time delivery². This approach involved
defining the processes, measuring the performance, analyzing the data, improving the processes,
and controlling the outcomes. This approach is based on the principles of leadership, engagement of
people, improvement, and evidence-based decision making.

- **Edgewood Chemical Biological Center** sought **ISO 17025 accreditation** for its
Environmental Monitoring Laboratory, which helps the U.S. Department of Defense establish quality
control requirements when testing for chemical warfare agents². The accreditation process required
creating or modifying more than 60 controlled documents and meeting the international standards
for testing and calibration laboratories. This process is based on the principles of customer focus,
process approach, and improvement.
