CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 TERM
Personal suffer is the experience of unpleasantness and aversion associated with the
perception of harm or treat of harm in an individual. Suffer is the basic element that makes
up the negative valence or affective phenomena. Suffering is often categorized as physical or
mental. It may come all degrees of intensity, from mild to intolerable. Factors of duration and
frequency of occurrence usually compound that of intensity. Attitudes toward suffering may
vary widely, in the sufferer or other people, according to how much it is regarded as
avoidable or unavoidable, useful or useless, deserved or undeserved.

1.2 BRIEF OF AUTHOR

William Blake was born in London on November 28, 1757, to James, a hosier, and
Catherine Blake. Two of his six siblings died in infancy. From early childhood, Blake spoke
of having visions—at four he saw God “put his head to the window”; around age nine, while
walking through the countryside, he saw a tree filled with angels. Although his parents tried
to discourage him from “lying," they did observe that he was different from his peers and did
not force him to attend conventional school. He learned to read and write at home. At age
ten, Blake expressed a wish to become a painter, so his parents sent him to drawing school.
Two years later, Blake began writing poetry. When he turned fourteen, he apprenticed with
an engraver because art school proved too costly. One of Blake’s assignments as apprentice
was to sketch the tombs at Westminster Abbey, exposing him to a variety of Gothic styles
from which he would draw inspiration throughout his career. After his seven-year term

ended, he studied briefly at the Royal Academy.

1.3 REASON
I think the poem “A POISON TREE” by William Blake is a famous classic poem that has
a deep meaning and it’s interesting to analysis. It used a lot of metaphor in the poems. It
should read more and more to know the purpose the speakers.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

2.1 THE ANALYSIS

In the first stanza tell about the differences between feelings that the speakers felt to his
friend and with the enemy. Friend is the closest people in our life, it was very important but
in the real life we also have a clash with a friend. This is how the speakers show his feelings
about that in this poem. The speakers want to tell the message to the reader that we could
angry with people around us, but we should know how we can solved this problem. The
problem should be fix together to get a better life. We couldn’t live with bad feelings in our
heart it would makes our life’s not comfortable anymore. We should live with a positive
thinking and try to solved anything the problem as fast as we can. Even the rival is not your
friend, not people that humble to you, not people that you know well you shouldn’t keep
something yourself. The people that makes you angry won’t know if you still keep silent,
show up your real character and you will get a great character by your affirmation.

“I was Angry with my friend:

I told my wrath, my wrath did end.

I was angry with my foe:

I told it not, my wrath did grow.”(stanza 1)

In the first line tell about his feeling with his friend. It’s show in this line “I was Angry
with my friend: I told my wrath, my wrath did end.”(line 1 ) there is a clash between the speakers and
his friend. In the beginning of first line “I was Angry with my friend:” means he got bad feelings
with his friend. Angry means you are dejected by something, it can be anything. It’s a clash
between the speakers and his friend, it’s usually because there is misunderstanding between
them. They should solved the problem itself like in the line “I told my wrath” means the
speakers not only angry and stay like that, he try to tell the problem that makes him angry
with his friend. He told the problem to finish the misunderstanding and try to fix the problem
between them. Wrath in this line means more stronger than angry, means it is a big problem
not the little clash that usually happens in our life. The speakers felt bad and not comfortable
to spent his life with that feelings to his friend. After they solved the problem, the wrath also
disappear like it’s not happens like in the end of the line said my wrath did end” means all the
bad feelings was gone. The angry, dejected, bad feelings between them has gone away and
the situation could be normally like before. It is how the true friend do in their relationship,
they got a clash but they also solved the problem and got a better feelings each other. Clash
will makes they relationship more stronger than before, it is not only knowing each other but
also understanding each other inside and outside the person itself.

In the second line, the speakers tell about the bad feelings with the enemy it is show
in this line “I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow.”(line 2) The speakers felt a bad
feelings to the foe means it is a people that has a bad character in the speakers mind. Foe
means a bad people that the speakers felt around him, and he couldn’t do anything about
that, for example to stay away from that people it’s very impossible because wherever we
go, wherever we live it will be there a bad feelings for other people that has a bad character
in the speakers mind. In the second line “I told it not” means the speakers couldn’t show
his bad feelings to the people that he got angry or we could call that people the rival. The
speakers still saved his relationship with the rival with silent. He couldn’t told the problem
and saved for himself. It is very impossible to tell the rival what he felt and solved the
problem because he was very angry and he don’t want to solved the problem like with his
friend. He couldn’t show the other side of himself, he just act like usually even he was very
angry with the rival. In the end of second line “my wrath did grow” it means the speakers felt
more stronger than angry because it used wrath in the poet. The speakers felt dejection to
the rival, especially the rival didn’t felt guilty of anything and it could be more mistakes
that the rival do to the speakers because of missunderstanding between both of them. “did
grow” in the last of second line means the speakers had very bad feelings for the rival it can
be hate or something that dislike the rival and it still getting angry than before. The
speakers couldn’t control his feelings because he won’t to told the problem to the rival, so
the rival could be do the same mistakes or more serious mistakes that makes the speakers
felt getting worse.
In the second stanza, the speakers tell about the speakers that felt getting worse with
the rival, and he felt suffer by the rival. It could be a deep suffer that the speakers felt until
someone could crying. The rival makes the speakers suffer with the daily activity around
the speakers, and it happens everyday all the time.

“And it grew both day and night,

Till it bore an apple bright.

And my foe beheld it shine,

And he knew that is was mine.”(stanza 2)

In the third line the speaker describe about “And I waterd it in fears, Night & morning with my
tears:”(line 3)Means that the speakers felt was getting worse than before, like the third line
said “And I waterd it in fears.” Waterd here means what the real life speakers, everyday with a
bad feelings. It could be violence that he got from someone, family, friends or people
around him. Fears in here means the felt of the speakers, it strongest the opinion that the
speakers got violence it could be from the rival that told in the first stanza. Fears is afraid of
somethings, it is the speakers want to show in this poet. In the end of third line strongest
the opinion that the speakers got violence “Night & morning with my tears” means the speakers
didn’t comfortable with his life, it could be violence that he got in the time that showed in
the line. “Night & morning” means all the time that the speakers had is just suffer that he felt.
“Tears” strongest that the speakers felt is suffer because the violence itself could makes
tears in everyone that felt it. The speakers want to show that must be a deep suffer that he
felt until someone could crying. The rival makes the speakers suffer with the daily activity
around the speakers, and it happens everyday all the time like in the last of third line “Night
& morning” but the speakers still suffer with the rival’s do in his life.

In the fourth line the speakers describe about “And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft
deceithful wiles.”(line 4) Means the speakers cover all his angry, wrath, suffer and all bad
feelings that he had with the opposites of the real heart.

In third stanza describe about the speakers that got suffer from the rival, in this
stanza showed it continue everyday. The speakers try to makes a good character to makes
everyone likes his appearance. In this stanza also describe about the rival that know about
the speakers other side but he just avoid it.
“And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,

And he knew that is was mine.” (stanza 3)

In the fifth line “And it grew both day and night” (line 5) means the speakers wiles start
develop day by day. Everyday all time that showed in line “both day and night” means it’s
gonna be the speakers character because he always do that wiles everyday. The speakers
not only lies to himself but also everyone around him. In the end of fifth line “till it bore an
apple bright” means even the speakers was bore with his act but it still makes a good
character outside if the people look at his appearance. In the “an apple bright” means the
speakers success makes a good character because an apple means a great fruit, delicious
food that everyone like and the bright means the speakers look’s interesting than the other.
It makes the speakers conspicuous.

In the sixth line “And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that is was mine.” means the rival
had looked for the real character of the speakers. Foe means the enemy, rival it strengthen
that the speakers was very hate this person. Beheld means see the true of the speakers
secret. “shine” means it deceive everyone with a good character that the speakers build. In
the end of sixth line “And he knew that it was mine” means the rival realized that the speakers
had an awkward side even he has built a good character, but he thinks it’s just the other
side of the speakers. He didn’t think too much about it, he even didn’t think that the
speakers was very hate him so much.

In the last stanza the speakers tell about the speakers comfortable places that snatch
away by his rival. The rival take a luck from the speakers, but the speakers just calm. Then
one day the rival was surrender and the speakers could live well it showed in the last line.

” And into my garden stole.

When the night had veiled the pole;

In the morning glad I see,

My foe outstretchd beneath the tree.”(stanza 4)

In the seventh line “and into my garden stole” means the places in this poems, the
places was very comfortable because in the garden it’s the great places for people to rilex’s
and enjoy themselves. In the word “stole” means his comfortable places was snatch away by
his rival. In the end of seventh line line “when the night had veiled the pole” means it showed the
character of the rival that he try to take a luck from the other people it can be the speakers.
The speakers just silent.

In the eighth line “In the morning glad I see” means in the morning is a great time for
everyone to start a new day, with a sunset the morning means the speakers start a new day.
In the word “glad I see” means the speakers was very happy to start his day. In the end of
eighth line “My foe outstretched beneath the tree” means the rival has defeated by the speakers. It
strengthen by the word “outstretchd beneath the tree” means the speakers showed in this line
that his rival was surrender. Then, the speakers could live well without the suffer. The good
things will destroy the bad things.

In this poems showed that we should be strong people, because in the society the
fact everyone it’s not as good as you look. Your friend also could be your rival, we can’t
trust anyone even it’s your friend. You should cover all that you felt to increase the clash,
it’s not good for your appearance in the society. Even the rival makes you felt suffer
everytime and everywhere you should be strong people, just trust oneday the god things
will destroy the bad things.
A POISON TREE
By William Blake
I was Angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And it grew both day and night,

Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that is was mine.

And into my garden stole.

When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see,
My foe outstretchd beneath the tree.
