Ey SAPNote 2718982 - SAP HANA on VMware vSphere and vSAN 6.5, 6.7, and 7.0 ‘Component: BC-OP-LNX-ESX (Linux on VmWare ESX), Version: 25, Released On: 28.11.2023 | Symptom ‘You want to install SAP HANA platform on a FICT solution based on VMware vSphere and vSAN. | Other Terms ESXi, VMware, vSphere, virtualized SAP HANA, HCI, vSAN, hypereonverged infrastructure | Reason and Prerequisites SAP declares support for VMware vSAN for virtual deployments in production scenarios of SAP HANA on SAP HANA HCI certified hardware configurations. Certified Hardware for HCI solutions based on VMare vSAN can be found on the Certified _Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Solutions web page [1] ‘The SAP HANA start release defined as “SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 12 Rev. 122.19" includes support for SAP HANA 2.0. vSAN in non-IICT certified hardware configurations is not supported. To use the benefits of Intel Skylake or Cascade Lake architecture SAP strongly recommends the use of SAP HANA 2.0, | Solution SAP HANA HCT solutions are currently supported with following VMware vSAN and vSphere versions and hardware: + CPU architecture: « Intel Skylake, Cascade Lake, or Cooper Lake processors with 2,4 & 8 socket servers with existing VMware vSphere virtualization boundaries. Cooper Lake requires vSAN 7.0 U2. «Ice Lake processors with 2 socket servers with existing vSphere virtualization boundaries. Ice Lake requires SAN 7.0 03 (= U3e). © Certified Hardware for HCT solutions can be found on the Certified Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Solutions (1} + VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5, 6.7, 6.7 U2/U3, 7.0 U1/U2/Uge(Uge and upcoming U3 versions) © SAP HANA SPS 12 Rev. 122.19 (or later releases) for production single-VM and multi-VM use cases. See SAP Note 2393017 [2] for detailed information and constraints. SAP HANA on SAN has additional constraints, see next section. + VMware vSAN 6.6, 6.7 (inel. U1, U2/Ua) and 7.0 U1/U2/Uze (Uge and upcoming U3 versions excluding 7.0 base version) Starting from above vSAN versions, the HCI vendor ean select the appropriate vSAN version for their HCI solution, © The vSAN versions 6.6 and 6.7 [3] are included in vSphere version [4] 6.5 U2 and vSphere version 6.7 / 6.7 U2/U3 respectively. vSAN 7.0 version U1 is included in vSphere version 7.0 U1, vSAN 7.0 U2/U3e in vSphere 7.0 U2/U3e. © Maximum number of spuported SAP HANA VMs: 1 Skylake, Cascade Lake, Cooper Lake: vSAN 6.6, 6.7, 6.7 Ux, 6.7 U2, 6.7 U3, 7.0 U1, 7.0 U2, 7.0 >= Use Maximum 4 SAP HANA VMs on 2, 4, and 8 socket servers 1 Tee Lake: SAN >= 7.0 Use. Maximum 4 SAP HANA VMs on 2 sockets servers © No CPU sockets need to get reserved for vSAN. Please note that vSAN will need, just like ESXi, system resourees. Please refer to VMware KB 2113954 for information on resource needs of vSAN, + Scale-Out support: © Intel Cascade Lake or Cooper Lake processors with 4 & 8 socket servers with existing VMware vSphere virtualization boundaries. © Node size 2 TB = Up to 1 master plus 7 worker nodes are possible. HA nodes should be added according to the cluster-size. FAQ: SAP HANA High Availability [6] = Upto2 TB of RAM per Scale-Out node (VM), * Sizing up to class L workloads = vSAN 6.7 U2/U3 and 7.0 U1/U2/U3e © Node size 3 TB = Upto 1 master plus 7 worker nodes are possible. HA nodes should be added according to the cluster-size. FAQ: SAP HANA High Availability [6] = Upto 3 TB of RAM per Scale-Out node (VM). = Sizing up to class M workloads = VSAN 6.7 U2/U3 and 7.0 U1/U2/U3¢ © Node size 6 TB on 8 socket servers = Up to1 master plus 7 worker nodes are possible, HA nodes should be added according to the cluster-size. FAQ: SAP HANA High Availability [6] = Up to 6 TB of RAM per Seale-Out node (VM). = Sizing up to class M workloads = vSAN7.0 U3e Additional support information: ‘SAN for SAP HANA is only supported as part of an SAP HANA HCI vendor-specific and certified solution “The vendor specific vSAN configuration of a certified SAP HANA HCI solution may only be changed as part of the vendors specific recommendation, e.g. new server firmware, recommended vSAN settings (e.g. deduplication, encryption) ‘The hardware must be listed on the SAP HANA hardware directory under “HCI Certified Hardware” ("Certified Appliances" and "Supported Intel Systems” must not be used for HCD) ‘The SAP HANA HCI solution vendor (hardware vendor) is the primary support contact for the customer. ‘The SAP HANA HCI solution vendor is responsible for installing on the vSphere ESXi host the SAP HANA HCI VMware ¥SAN Detection Seript, which ean get downloaded from this link Intel Optane DCPMM (PMEM) can be used with Cascade Lake CPUs as deseribed in note 2013410. Please note that especially the VMware HA restriction (as described in the mentioned note) applies and needs to get considered. In case of increased network latencies between the application servers and the HANA database, please refer to SAP note 13102813 and consider the use of pass-through network cards instead of VMXNET3. ‘This note will be continuously updated with the latest support information without further notice.
