Tangkuban Parahu Mountain

Sitting elegantly while enjoying the panorama of northern Bandung, from the distance Tangkuban
Parahu Mountain standing elegantly. Tangkuban Parahu Mountain is one of the volcanoes that are
still active in West Java. Located at an altitude of 2084m above sea level, this uniquely shaped
mountain has attracted many visitors for decades. Many tourists come to look more closely at the
crater, and enjoy the panorama of the valley around it.

According to geological history, Mt. Tangkuban Parahu formed from recurring volcanic eruptions in
the Sunda prehistoric times. Note the last eruption in the second century was in 1829, 1846, 1862,
1887, 1896, 1910, and 1929. From the top of the tower in the city of Bandung Gedung Sate, you can
see very clearly the physical shape of Mt. Tangkuban Parahu that really resembles an upturned boat.

Tangkuban Parahu was named after its unique shape, which means upturned boat. Based on local
stories, the mountain was once a boat that was kicked by a man named Sangkuriang. The story began
when a beautiful woman named Dayang Sumbi who lived in the woods with her dear dog named
Tumang lost her only weaving kit. Dayang Sumbi, who loved to weave, then promised to herself, if a
man found her weaving kit, she would marry him. Unexpectedly, her dog Tumang was the one who
brought her weaving kit back. Dayang Sumbi who always kept her promises finally married her dog
Tumang, who was an incarnation of Saint.

Sometime later, Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a handsome baby boy named Sangkuriang. Dayang
Sumbi, Tumang, and Sangkuriang lived happily. One day, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuriang to bring
her a deer’s heart for dinner. Sangkuriang then went for a hunt with Tumang. In the woods,
Sangkuriang saw a glance of deer. He then ordered Tumang to catch the deer. Unlike usual, Tumang
refused to catch the deer. Sangkuriang was really angry. He “If you don’t want to catch the deer, I will
take your heart instead!” Tumang persisted and sat there, refusing to catch the deer. The angry
Sangkuriang then killed Tumang, who he didn’t know was his biological father, and took Tumang’s
heart to bring to Dayang Sumbi.

Sangkuriang went home with Tumang’s heart in his hands. Dayang Sumbi looked around and said,
“where is Tumang?”. Sangkuriang then explained, he killed Tumang because he didn’t do what
Sangkuriang ordered. Dayang Sumbi went furious and hit Sangkuriang in the head. That incident hurt
Sangkuriang’s feelings. He thought Dayang Sumbi was overreacting & loved her dog more than her
own child. He then ran away from his house & went back to the woods. Dayang Sumbi regretted her
action and felt really upset. She went to a cave and meditated, she begged God for forgiveness. She
also asked for eternal beauty, in the hope Sangkuriang could recognize her one day and she could
meet Sangkuriang again. The Gods heard Dayang Sumbi’s prayer, and granted her wish.

On the other side, Sangkuriang continued to wander without a certain destination. In his journey,
Sangkuriang continued to increase his supernatural powers by studying magic from people he met
during his wanderings. For years, Sangkuriang wandered without realizing he returned to the place
where he was born. There, Sangkurian met a woman and he was fascinated by her beauty. He didn’t
realize that the beautiful woman he met in the forest was his own biological mother. The same thing
happened to Dayang Sumbi, she didn’t realize that the gallant young man he met was his son,
Sangkuriang. They fell in love with each other and planned to get married.

Before the wedding, Sangkuriang intended to hunt. Dayang Sumbi helped Sangkuriang to put on the
headband. That's when Dayang Sumbi saw the wound on her future husband's head. She suddenly
remembered his son who had left him. He was very sure that the man standing in front of her was her
son Sangkuriang. She then explained that they were actually biologically related. It was a big sin for
them to get married. However, Sangkuriang didn’t care and insisted on marrying Dayang Sumbi.

Dayang Sumbi then made a deal. “I want you to fulfill my wish. If you succeed, you can marry me. But
if you fail, then you should leave me." said Dayang Sumbi. Dayang Sumbi then put forward a very
difficult condition. She wanted the Citarum river to be dammed to make a lake, she also requested a
big boat in the lake. Sangkuriang should be able to finish all of that in one night. “Before dawn, both
of my requests must have been done by you," said Dayang Sumbi. Without any doubt, Sangkuriang
accepted her challenge. Sangkuriang immediately worked to fulfill Dayang Sumbi's request. First, he
cut down a big tree to build a boat. Branches and tree branches he didn't need were piled up. The pile
of tree branches and twigs later turned into Mount Burangrang. Likewise, the tree stump turned into a
mountain which is better known as Gunung Bukit Tunggul.

The big boat was finally finished by Sangkuriang. He then intended to stem the swift flow of the
Citarum river to make a lake. Sangkuriang, who had magic power then summoned the spirits to help
him finish the work. Everything Sangkuriang did was known by Dayang Sumbi. Seeing Sangkuriang's
work was about to be finished, Dayang Sumbi felt a bit worried. She then asked God for help. After
praying, Dayang Sumbi then spread boéh rarang (a woven white cloth) and forced the rooster to crow
much earlier that night. The spirits were very frightened when they found out that dawn had arrived.
They ran and disappeared. They left their work of making lakes and boats unfinished. Sangkuriang was
very angry. He felt that Dayang Sumbi had cheated on him. He was very sure that the real dawn had
not yet arrived. Sangkuriang then angrily broke the dam at Sanghyang Tikoro. The stopper of the
Citarum flow was then thrown to the east which later turned into Mt. Manglayang. The water that
originally filled the lake had receded. His anger hasn't subsided. Sangkuriang then kicked the big boat
he had made so far and fell facedown. The big boat turned into a mountain which is now called
Tangkuban Parahu mountain. Sangkuriang’s anger continued to overflow, Dayang Sumbi was chased.
Dayang Sumbi scaredly ran to escape until she finally disappeared on a hill. The hill is now called Mt.
Putri. Meanwhile, Sangkuriang who failed to find Dayang Sunbi finally disappeared into the unseen
world.

Now, Tangkuban Parahu has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in West Java. Not only
spoiling the eyes, but the stories behind all the beauty displayed in northern Bandung also tarts from
here.

White crater

Around the 10th - 13th centuries, Mount Patuha, which is located 50 km to the southwest of Bandung
in West Java, erupted twice. Not long after the twice eruption occurred, the locals got wind of mystical
stories. They said, every animal, especially birds passing through Mount Patuha, must have fallen and
died.

This incident which was considered mystical at that time attracted the curiosity of many people,
including Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, a doctor who is also a German botanist and geologist. In 1873,
Junghuhn with his scientific reasoning ventured to climb Mount Patuha. He then found answers to the
myths winding among the locals.

Behind Mount Patuha there is an acid crater. This crater, which is now known as Kawah Putih, was
formed because of the Mount Patuha eruption. Kawah Putih emits a suffocating sulfur smell, though
the appearance is so beautiful with greenish-white or bluish water. These beautiful colors are created
because of the concentration of acid and sulfur content in reacting with the temperature and cold air
around the mountain.

In 1987, the local authorities finally opened the Kawah Putih area to the public and until now Kawah
Putih has become a popular tourist destination for both local and foreign tourists.
Patenggang Lake (Situ Patenggang)

Called with The Legendary Romantics Lake in West Java, Patenggang Lake was born with the magical
love story between Ki Santang and Dewi Rengganis.

The name patenggang comes from the same name that it means to "search." It is related to the love
story between Prabu Kian Santang and Dewi Rengganis. They have to separate for a long time
because of the war that involves the Pajajaran Kingdom, so they need to search for each other. Then
finally, they meet at the place called Batu Cinta.

Batu Cinta is located on Cinta Island in the middle of the lake. Situ Patenggang was made from Dewi
Rengganis's request. She wants to have a lake that can be surrounded by the two of them by boat,
and the lake was made as a form of love from Ki Santang to Dewi Rengganis.

Another story told that Patenggang Lake was made by the tears of Dewi Rengganis when she finally
met with Ki Santang at the Batu Cinta in the Cinta Island.

Besides the differences in the story, Patenggang Lake is a perfect destination to spend with the people
you love.

and botanical garden in Bandung. It covers 590 hectares, stretching from Dago Pakar to Maribaya.

the fortifications and military headquarters. Because of those historical places in Djuanda Forest Park,
the West Java government then changed it into a historical recreation area. You can see those caves
still in there and now open for the public to explore.

lake has a story behind it. There are two versions of stories behind the clarity of this lake. One is
because the Wali Songo's wand in Cirebon Region, Sunan Gunung Jati, and the other is because of a
lady that stays here at that time named Nyi Bomas Inten. These two versions are unexpectedly
connected to each other.

The story about Wali Songo (Nine Guardians of Indonesia) in West Java is very sacred and famous at
the same time. They are the ones who spread Islam in Indonesia. One of them, Sunan Gunung Jati is
one who and stayed in the Cirebon region spread Islam in West Java. Once told that Sunan Gunung
Jati came to the land at the foot of Ciremai Mountain. He came and stuck his stick and then came a
spring that continued to rise and turned into a lake. The Wali Songo uses the lake as a place to wudhu.

The other story told that this lake came from the Nyi Bomas Inten and her husband Syekh Abdul Iman
the descendants of Keraton Cirebon. They are trusted to guard the place. Once local residents are hit
by a lack of water. Syekh Abdul Iman search for help from Wali Songo to find the solution to this

Trusmi Batik Village

In the northern coast of West Java, there is an Indonesian Batik Art Village called ‘Batik Trusmi Village’.
It is located around 4 KM west of the city center. This village is the heart of Cirebon’s Batik production.
Even though it’s originally from Cirebon, a lot of people are more familiar with ‘Batik Trusmi’. This
place is where you will find the best of Cirebon’s distinct batik materials and art.

At Trusmi Village, there are over 1,000 batik artisans who work daily to produce fine masterpieces.
Along the 1.5KM main road, you will find rows of Batik Trusmi stores and showrooms lining up the
streets showcasing their finest products. Nowadays, keeping up with cyber trends, there are also
stores that sell Batik Trusmi online.

Unlike other Batik-producing areas like Solo that mainly features one distinct style of Batik Keraton
(Royal Batik) or Pekalongan that focuses on Batik Pesisir (Coastal Batik), Cirebon features both styles
of batik. Similar to those of Yogyakarta or Solo, Cirebon’s classic royal batik styles have here also been
developed by the royal palaces (the Kasepuhan and the Kanoman Sultanates), while the coastal batik
itself emerged from trade and fishing communities who brought their own motifs and style. Royal
batik is characterized by motifs of royal symbols based on religious philosophy, while the coastal
batiks are more dynamic and open to current trends.

The history of Batik at Trusmi Village is believed to have been initiated by an Islamic religious leader
by the name of Ki GedeTrusmi who was a loyal follower of Sunan Gunung Jati (one of the Wali Songo
or the 9 Guardians of Islam who first spread Islam on Java Island). KI GedeTrusmi is said to have been
the one who taught the people the art of batik while spreading Islam across the region. Besides being
immortalized through the name of the village, Ki GedeTrusmi today remains very highly honored by
the local inhabitants. His tomb is well preserved and every 4 years, the Trusmi villagers conduct a ritual
called Ganti Welit and Ganti Sirap (changing the roof of the tomb).
