Student Outcome: Introduction to the clarinet including part identification and


assembly, playing technique, and first notes

Context for Learning:


Individual instruction, 13th grade

Instructional Delivery:
Guided hands-on experience
Explain and show the student information and skills related to flute playing.

Procedures:
1. Identify parts
a. Show the student how to open the case.
b. Show each of the parts, explaining what they are called and what they
do (ex: reed, mouthpiece, ligature, cork, barrel, upper section, tone
holes, tone hole rings, bridge keys, lower section, bell). Use the book as
further visual aid.
2. Assemble parts
a. Have the student take out the parts one at a time. Quiz them on the
names.
b. Show the student how to connect the parts.
i. Pay special attention to the moistening and placement of the reed
on the mouthpiece, and on how to position/tighten the ligature.
c. Show the student how to clean the instrument.
3. Hold the instrument
a. Show the student how the fingers of the left and right hands are placed
on the tone hole.
b. Have the student demonstrate. Assist.
c. Explain resting and ready position to the student and have them
demonstrate.
4. Sit with good form
a. Demonstrate good posture. Have the student copy.
b. Explain to the student how the clarinet is aligned with the student’s head
when playing. Assist.
5. Create a tone and learn about embouchure.
a. Instruct the student in full breathing with warm air.
b. Have the student close mouth on mouthpiece and reed, with the upper
lip farther forward and the lower lip over the lower teeth.
c. Help them find correct placement to create a good tone. Tell them to:
i. Firm up their bottom lip.
ii. Pull the bell in.
iii. Adjust so that their mouth is not too low or too high.
iv. Apply more or less pressure.
v. Give more or less air.
6. Learn the first notes
a. Explain that the clarinet is a B♭instrument.
b. Introduce finger positions for C, D, and E slowly, allowing the student to
try to play each. Consider including F and G.

Assessment and Evaluation (formative):


1) Student points to the correct parts of the clarinet when you quiz them on the
names
1) Student creates a tone and is able to explain a few ways to improve their
embouchure
2) Student correctly demonstrates how to assemble the parts
3) Student correctly demonstrates how to correctly hold the clarinet
4) Student is able to correctly play the first few notes on the clarinet

Closure:
1) Tell the student to pack up the clarinet. Help them if necessary.
2) Ask if there are any questions. Answer them thoroughly.
3) Assign HW: Practice fingerings for the first few notes, and practice producing a
tone.
