We are devastated by the continued loss of life at schools due to violence.

Every
student in our schools deserves real safety.

In light of the recent news that the Chicago Board of Education is pushing to remove
School Resource Officers from CPS schools, the Union demands that CPS bargain
with it over the impact this decision will have on bargaining unit employees.

The Chicago Teachers Union believes that CPS has a critical role to play in
preventing violence and responding to the resulting trauma when violence occurs in
school communities.

The Union expects that our bargaining will include, amongst other things,
(1) robust and relational violence prevention and interruption;
(2) stronger and clearer immediate response “day of” protocols;
(3) stronger and clearer immediate aftermath “next day” protocols;
;4) sustainable longer term infrastructure and trauma support;
(5) options and resources for recognition and memorialization;
(6) repairs and replacement of interior doors, locks and intercom systems;
(7) creation and distribution of keys;
(8) increased and improved campus lighting, cameras, and security alarms; and
(9) redistribution of security teams to maximize safety.
