March 2016
As of fourth quarter 2015, the 333 credit unions and caisses populaires outside of Quebec
reported combined assets of over $193.6 billion, a six-month increase of 3.3 per cent over
second quarter 2015.
The appearance of the largest ten credit unions changed somewhat from second quarter
2015, with Assiniboine Credit Union and Connect First Credit Union switching positions.
Assiniboine Credit Union moved to ninth position, while Connect First Credit Union shifted to
tenth position. With the top 10 credit unions recording a comparable 6-month growth rate of
3.2 per cent to the overall system, these ten credit unions maintained their 47 per cent
share of system assets. The largest 10 credit unions had combined assets of $90.8 billion –
an increase of $2.8 billion from the $88.1 billion recorded at second quarter 2015.
A further breakdown shows the five largest credit unions with gains in assets of 2.8 per cent
for the six-month period. This small group of credit unions account for 35 per cent of all
system assets in the country (excluding Quebec), with combined assets of $67.5 billion.
Credit unions ranked in the 11 to 100 group recorded the largest gains during the six-month
period. The 4.6 per cent six-month growth rate was partly attributed to a number of
mergers occurring during the last half of 2015 within this group. System assets outside of
the top 100 credit unions experienced a decline of 0.5 per cent.
