GRAPHIC
DESIGN
ESSENTIALS
What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is the process of creating visual content that helps to communicate messages with an
audience. The art of visual communication is essential, especially for brands looking to connect with their
target audience, and graphic design is the perfect solution.

It is a versatile field that can be applied to many different industries and mediums. For example, graphic
designers may create logos and branding materials for businesses, design packaging for products,
develop websites and apps, create advertising campaigns, or design print materials such as brochures
and flyers.
In modern communication and marketing strategies, graphic design plays a crucial role. It allows
businesses and individuals to effectively communicate their message and connect with their audience
through visually appealing and engaging designs.

To further understand how graphic design works, you need to understand the different
elements that make up a design in which we cover on the next pages.
Elements of graphic design
The graphic design elements include:

Line Aa Typography

Shape Space

Form Imagery

Color Texture
A Line
A line is a basic element of graphic design that is used to create shapes, patterns, and textures. It can be
thick or thin, straight or curved, and can be used to define edges or create movement.
Lines can be straight, curved, thick, solid or dashed. Used considerately, lines can add elegance to a
composition, add hierarchy and to draw the eye to a specific point. Below are some examples of lines
Shape
Shapes are created by connecting lines to form two-dimensional objects such as circles, squares, and
triangles. They can be used to create patterns, balance, and contrast in a design.

Shapes can also be organic or geometric, and their size, orientation, and placement can greatly impact
the overall composition of a design. For example, using a large circle as the main shape in a design can
create a sense of unity and harmony, while using several small triangles can create a dynamic and
energetic feeling. The use of negative space, or the space around and between shapes, can also be an
important aspect of creating an effective design. Overall, shapes are a versatile and powerful element
of graphic design that can be used to convey a wide range of messages and emotions.
Forms
Form refers to the three-dimensional aspect of a design. It can be created by adding
shading, perspective, and depth to shapes and objects.
Form can also be created through the use of light and shadow, which can give objects a
sense of volume and depth. The manipulation of form can greatly impact the overall mood
and tone of a design. For example, using sharp, angular forms can create a sense of
tension and aggression, while using soft, rounded forms can create a feeling of calm and
tranquility. Form is an important element of graphic design as it can add depth and
dimension to a design, making it more visually interesting and engaging.
Color
Color is an essential element of graphic design that can evoke emotions and create a mood. It can be
used to create contrast, balance, and harmony in a design.

Space
Space refers to the area around and between elements in a design. It can be used to create balance,
contrast, and flow in a design.

The two types of space in graphic design are positive space and negative space.
Positive space refers to the area occupied by the design elements, such as images, text, and shapes. It
is the actual physical presence of the design elements within the layout.

Negative space, also known as white space, is the area around and between the design elements. It is
the empty or blank space that surrounds the design elements and provides breathing room for the eye.
Negative space can be used to create contrast, balance, and visual interest in a design.
