Types of Limit States:

1 Ultimate Limit States or Limit state of Collapse

The maximal stress condition of the structure right

before it collapses is known as the limit state.

It provides sufficient strength and serviceability

throughout a structured life by limit state.

In the limit state technique, the limit state of collapse deals

with the structure's safety, while the limit state of
serviceability deals with the structure's durability.

2 Serviceability Limit State

In civil engineering, the limit state of serviceability refers to

the condition in which the construction is useful.

It is not serviceable if the structure is not utilised.

To avoid excessive bending and cracking, the limit state

is established.

It ensures the structure's adequate performance during

working load.

Because it deforms but does not collapse under the working

load, it is computed using elastic theory or the working
stress approach.

In the limit state of serviceability, there are two factors to

consider: limit state of deflection and limit state of cracking.

The structure should be designed based on the most critical

limit and then checked for additional limit situations.
