FEARN Word Fearn received degrees from the Cunis Institute of Music. where he studied with Anton Homer, and the University of Michigan, Upon joining the Philadelphia Orchestra, he was the youngest member and remained with the orchestra for 24 years, In 1953 he was invited to participate in the Pablo Casals Music Festival in Prades, France and again in 961 and 1963 in San Juan, Puerto Rice. {Al ihe present time he is Associate Professor of French Horn at the Univer sity of South Florida. His former students are associatea with the major o- chestras in the United States, Australia and New Zealand 1973 by Elkan-Vogel. Inc PRELIMINARY INSTRUCTIONS MOUTHPIECE PLACEMENT Place mouthpiece in center of lips, 2/3 on upper lip, 1/3 on lower lip. Keep space between teeth about the thickness of relaxed tongue. Lay right hand against side away from body. Cup hand slightly and feel weight of horn on thumb knuckle. Make sure that approximately 1/2 of bell is open, HOW TO BREATHE AND START TONE Cough and see how air-pyessure comes from the diaphragm, ‘Take a big, deep breath and make the same air-pressure as “coughing” before sounding the tone. Spit with tongue, placing pointed tip of tongue where upper teeth and upper lip meet. Avoid the tendency to “chop off" the last slurred note.
