SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

1.6 Print Designs

Basic designs can be created at the SmartDate 3 user interface
using up to 4 lines of text. The size and type of font is limited to 6
point Swiss Bold or 8 point Swiss Bold.
This type of design does not support live updates, such as Time and
Date fields, Best before Dates or Shift Codes.
For details see Section 5 - Machine Operation.
In addition, you can create your own designs on a PC using the
Markem.Imaje CoLOS Create Pro software.
These designs are then loaded into the SmartDate 3 memory using
the Markem.Imaje CoLOS Create Pro/CoLOS Control software or
by using a PCMCIA card.

1.6.1 CoLOS Create Pro

The designs printed by SmartDate 3 can be created using the
Markem.Imaje CoLOS Create Pro software. CoLOS Create Pro
allows text, bar codes and graphics to be placed onto the
SmartDate 3 print area. A brief description is given here relating to
how CoLOS Create Pro operates in conjunction with SmartDate 3.
For further details refer to the Markem.Imaje CoLOS Create Pro
Manual.
CoLOS Create Pro deals with two types of information: Formats and
Product information.
A Format file defines the type, size and number of items, or fields, to
be printed.
Product information stores fixed information specific to individual
products.
This split of information is only important to users creating print
designs. The SmartDate 3 itself generally deals with product
information only, Formats are handled automatically.

1–4 06/08
SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

SmartDate 3 and CoLOS Create Pro for SmartDate 3 currently

support the following information fields:
• Permanent Text / Bar codes
• Fixed Text / Bar codes
• Variable Text / Bar codes
• Merged Text / Bar codes
• Incremental Text/ Bar codes
• Automatic Best Before Dates
• Date and Time
• Variable Dates
• Lines
• Logos
• Shift Codes

1.6.2 SmartDate 3 and Fonts

SmartDate 3 uses three types of fonts in a range of styles. These
allow flexibility in the look of the printed image.
The three basic types are:
• Bitmap Fonts
• Scalable Fonts
• ILF Fonts

Bitmap Fonts
These are fast to update but can only be scaled in multiples of the
base font size. A font that is magnified many times will not have a
smooth appearance. These fonts provide the best performance for
dates/times and incremental values.
SmartDate 3 has three bitmap fonts stored internally these are:
• Markem.Imaje Font 1 and 2
• Corpus Christi in three base sizes
• Austin in two base sizes

06/08 1–5
SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

Scalable Fonts
These fonts can be set to any size and maintain a smooth profile as
the size is increased. Fields that use these fonts do, however, take
longer to update than fields that use bitmap fonts. This can restrict
the maximum product rate if these fonts are used for fields that
change from one print to the next.
SmartDate 3 has two internal scalable fonts:
• Swiss Bold – (Our version of Helvetica)
• OCR B – (This is used for human readable text on EAN/UPC
barcodes)
Other fonts can be downloaded into the SmartDate 3 as needed.
SmartDate 3 can store 3 additional scalable fonts as well as the 2
internal scalable fonts.

ILF Fonts
Markem.Imaje Fast fonts, or ILF fonts, combine fast field update of
bitmap fonts with the smooth profile of scalable fonts. The speed
benefits over other font types will vary depending upon the number
of fields and the size and original type of fonts used for these fields.
ILF fonts are supported by CoLOS Create Pro and CoLOS Control
for Windows V4.2 onwards. A font file is created for each size/style
combination of ILF font used. CoLOS Create Pro provides details of
the memory requirements of these files.

1–6 06/08
SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

1.6.3 Storage Capacity

The SmartDate 3 internal memory is capable of storing around 512
Kb. The number of Formats and layouts that can be stored depends
upon the complexity of the formats and the number of logos and
down loadable fonts used.
Typically, the standard memory is enough to store more than 100
formats and a layout for each format, or, 5 formats and 200 layouts.
However when logos or downloaded fonts are used these can take
up a great deal of memory and restrict the number of files that can
be stored.
To estimate the memory a logo requires you need to know the width
and height of the logo in dots (pixels) or in millimetres. The
approximate size in characters is:
width (mm) x height (mm) x 12 x 12/8,
or width (dots) x height (dots) / 8
These sizes are approximate, logos are compressed and will
typically be far smaller than the theoretical maximum size.

1.6.4 Retrieving and Storing Designs

Design information can be retrieved in 4 ways:
• Using CoLOS Create Pro software.
• Using CoLOS Control software (for networking) and a direct link
to a PC.
• Using PCMCIA memory cards, when this option is fitted.

06/08 1–7
SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

1.7 Networking the SmartDate 3

SmartDate 3 provides a number of very flexible and powerful
networking and data access methods.
In general it is assumed that all SmartDate 3 machines use the
CoLOS Control RS485 network.
RS232 can be used, but only provides a single link.
Only RS485 and Ethernet can be used to connect multiple units.
To provide an overview of the available options, this Section
describes a number of ways of using a PC or a number of
SmartDate 3 machines.
More complete details of how to configure the various modes of
operation are given in the SmartDate 3 Restricted Access Mode.

1.7.1 Networking SmartDate 3 with a PC

By installing a Markem.Imaje CoLOS Control card into a suitable PC
up to 60 SmartDate 3 printers can be connected with up to 2.6 km of
cable.
The PC can act as a file server or be used to control all SmartDate 3
machines.

1.7.2 Using the Local SmartDate 3 Memory

It is possible to use a SmartDate 3 as a stand alone unit. By
providing a CoLOS Control network the SmartDate 3 can have a
permanent link to a PC running CoLOS Control for Windows. This
saves taking a portable PC onto to factory floor to modify the local
memory of your SmartDate 3. In this mode the PC simply provides
format, layout or logo files to SmartDate 3 as requested.

1–8 06/08
SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

1.7.3 Using the PC to Store Information

For installations where the information printed needs to change
frequently or where there are the large number of formats or layouts
a PC can be used to store the data.
Here the SmartDate 3 uses a HOST database and prompts for a
filename when SET OVERPRINT is selected. The filename is sent
over the CoLOS Control Network to the PC and all the required
information transferred. The local memory of the SmartDate 3 is
only used to store the current layout information.

1.7.4 Controlling SmartDate 3 from a PC

By using CoLOS Control on the PC all SmartDate 3 printers can be
controlled from a single PC. They can be controlled individually or
as groups. This allows Use By information, for example, to be set for
a number of lines with a single operation at a PC.

1.7.5 Using the Master and Slave SmartDate 3

The design printed at a number of SmartDate 3 printers can be
controlled from a single control panel. This is achieved by
configuring one or more SmartDate 3 machines on a CoLOS
Control network as a Master and others as slaves.
When SET OVERPRINT is performed at a Master SmartDate 3 the
correct information is selected for the Master SmartDate 3 and is
also sent to the slave SmartDate 3. Master and Slave SmartDate 3
printers can be connected together without involving a PC on a day
to day basis.

06/08 1–9
SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

1.7.6 Combining Master/Slave operation with a PC

It is possible to use a PC as a file server in conjunction with Master
and slave operation.
In these cases the Master is used to perform the SET OVERPRINT
operation. To complete the operation the Master requests
information from the PC. When the operation is complete the Master
sends the entered information to the first slave. The slave then
requests information from the PC as required. This sequence is then
repeated for each slave.

1.7.7 Using PCMCIA

MS-DOS formatted SRAM (Static RAM) cards are used to transfer
information. Cards with between 128 Kb and 8 Mb of memory can
be used.
With a PCMCIA card fitted, the Engineer Mode menu has a
PCMCIA Database option.
For full details on using the PCMCIA card option please refer to
Section 5 - Machine Operation.

2.1 General Guidelines

The product is designed to conform to all current Machine Safety
Regulations.
Please read through this section before any operation of the
machine is undertaken.
CAUTION: SmartDate 3 printers are designed to work with
SmartDate 3 Controllers, under no circumstances
should they be used with SmartDate2 controllers.
This printer is designed for use with the following supply systems
that conform to IEC 664 light industrial / domestic installation
category II mains supply.
‘TN’ (any of following - TN-C, TN-S or TN-C-S) for example; a
system having one or more points of the source of energy directly
earthed, the exposed conductive parts of the installation being
connected to that point by protective conductors.
‘TT’ for example; a system having one point of the source of energy
directly earthed, the exposed conductive parts of the installation
being connected to earth electrodes electrically independent of the
earth electrodes of the source.
It is not suitable for connection to an ‘IT’ system for example; a
system having no direct connection between live parts and earth,
the exposed conductive parts of the installation being earthed. This
therefore excludes any ‘phase to phase’ connected supplies such as
may be available in some factories and / or countries.
If either supply fuse (located on the rear of the Controller, below the
supply connector) is replaced it must be replaced by an HBC Style
ceramic fuse with the rating shown as ‘T5AH250V’.

SECTION 2 - SAFETY

2.1.1 Installation Considerations

Installation must only be performed by qualified Markem.Imaje
Personnel. For customer installations, authorisation must be
obtained from Markem.Imaje. All relevant Safety Procedures must
be followed. Failure to do so may invalidate warranty.
1. It is recommended that the mains supply socket outlet be
installed within 1.7metres of the printer and be easily accessible.
2. ALWAYS disconnect the power to the machine before removing
any covers. You must remove the plug from the mains power
supply.
3. DO NOT insert body parts into the printhead opening whilst the
printer is powered as there is a danger that the mechanism will
move without warning and present a crushing hazard.
4. DO NOT operate the machine with any covers removed. ALL
covers must be in place using the appropriate number of
fasteners. It is essential that electrical and non-electrical
connector dust covers (provided with the machine) are fitted to
all unused connectors to protect against dust and dirt and
possible static damage to internal components.
5. Ensure all reasonable safety precautions have been undertaken.
However, please ensure that when working with / or around the
machine, every care is taken to avoid potential hazards.
ALWAYS take great care around the machine not to slip, trip or
fall. Especially if the machine is used in areas where the floor
may be wet or greasy.
6. If non-Markem.Imaje ribbon is used, it is recommended that anti
static properties be considered. Markem.Imaje cannot guarantee
the safety and / or suitability on non-Markem.Imaje print ribbon.
7. Take care in the unlikely event of an electronic fault causing an
unexpected start up, or printer drive motors, to avoid possible
injury.
8. If a verification scanner is used on this machine, please follow
the manufacturers safety procedures. When fitting and / or
operating the scanner, follow the specifications as stated in the
appropriate Laser Safety Standards (IEC825).
9. Please read the Isopropanol Safety Data Information prior to
using Isopropanol with any Markem.Imaje product.

2–2 06/08
SECTION 2 - SAFETY

10. A Hazard Warning Sticker (see next page) is placed on the

SmartDate 3 on the underside of the Controller for your safety
and should not be ignored or removed.
11. There is a danger of electrical shocks from the electrical outlet.
All Electronic checks must be performed by qualified personnel.
12. There is a non-replaceable lithium battery mounted on the
control board assembly (31A68C). Under no circumstances
should this be replaced (it should last for several years). In the
event of failure, please return the whole control board assembly
to Markem.Imaje for repair.

Please note the following:

Danger of explosion should the battery be incorrectly

replaced. Only Markem.Imaje recommended replacement to
be used. Used batteries to be disposed of according to the
battery manufacturer’s instructions.

The information above is correct to the best of our knowledge,

information and belief at the date of this publication. The information
given is designed only as a guidance for safe handling use,
processing, storage, transportation, disposal and release and is not
considered a warranty or quality specification. The information
relates only to the specific material designated and may not be valid
for such material used in combination with any other materials or in
any process unless specified in text.
Static Electricity Protection
Excessive Electro Static Discharge (ESD) around the printhead area
can cause damage to the SmartDate printhead and printer circuitry.
Static reduction methods should be installed where static is seen to
be a problem. Common areas of static build up are the print platens,
substrates and conveyors.
Methods such as carbon brushes on the substrate, earthed
conveyor frames and printer brackets, robust mains earthing and
de-ionising guns are commonly used.

2.3 EMC Considerations

To maintain the integrity of the EMC precautions taken with the
SmartDate 3, all connecting cables must be fully screened, and the
screen must have 360 degree contact with the metal connector and,
in turn, the unit’s case at both ends.

2.4 MET Approval

As part of the continuous improvement that Markem.Imaje strive for
in the manufacture of their products, we have attained NRTL
(Nationally Recognised Testing Laboratory) approval (via MET
Laboratories). This is related on the whole, to the use of UL
recognised components for safety critical items. The SmartDate 3
Controller and Cables are safety-critical items. The SmartDate 3
Controller will bear a distinctive marking on the reverse of the
Controller on the Serial Number Label. See below for illustration
purposes only.

To ensure the further future use of correct cable assemblies with

Markem.Imaje Products, only cables with the required UL
Certification be used (for example E116273 marked on the cable
denotes a UL approved 25 way ribbon cable). These can be
purchased directly from your Local Markem.Imaje Business Centre

As standard, a pre-made connector cable is provided for the I/O

(print/fault) signals. These cables will differ with machines as
identified below:
The SmartDate 3 I/O cables being a 3 metre multi-core pig-tail cable
to the 15-Way D-Type (solder tag).
The SmartDate3c I/O cable (5824637) is a 2 cable assembly. A ‘pig-
tail’ connector for the I/O to the host machine, and a pre-made cable
complete with connector to the encoder. The standard encoder
assembly (33727BB) now includes a mating connector.

Check that all items are present and undamaged before proceeding.

CAUTION: SmartDate 3 printers are designed to work with

SmartDate 3 Controllers, under no circumstances
should they be used with SmartDate2 controllers.

06/08 3–3
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.2 Installation Requirements

Ensure that these services and control signals are available:
• Power - 115/230 V AC (+10%, -15%) 50/60 Hz, 300 VA (max.) or
100/200 if required.
• Compressed Air - 6 Bar (max.), dry, uncontaminated.
• A Print Go Signal - This can be either a volt free contact which
closes when printing is required, or a 24 V DC signal from a PNP
sensor (positive edge triggered).
• Sufficient space for installation and operation.
• SmartDate3c also requires an encoder to monitor the substrate
speed.

3–4 06/08
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.3 Connecting Power and Air

3.3.1 Power Configuration

Connect the required power (115/230 V AC 50/60 Hz) or 100/200 V
AC 50/60 Hz) using the IEC lead provided. A 10 A fuse is used in
the mains plug connector, or a 10 A MCB is recommended to
protect the supply cable at source. The IEC inlet contains 20 mm
T5AH250V ceramic fuses. Select the appropriate operating voltage
by changing the fuse holder voltage selector position to match the
local supply voltage.

The arrow indicates the To change, remove the fuse

selected Voltage. holder and turn over.

Replace the fuse holder and

push firmly home.

Before switching on SmartDate 3 check that the correct input

voltage is configured and all cables are firmly secured. Connecting
mains power with the voltage set incorrectly will damage the
SmartDate 3. Use only 250 V rated fuses in the SmartDate 3.

06/08 3–5
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.4 Compressed Air

Connect the compressed air to the 4 mm (SmartDate3i) / 6 mm
(SmartDate3c) push fitting on the side of the Printer Body. The
brass bulkhead fitting allows exhaust air to escape from the printer,
therefore, it must not be blocked.

Air Exhaust

Air Inlet

A pressure regulator with a 6 mm push fit inlet is supplied to allow

the supply pressure to be controlled. This should be mounted using
the holes provided on the printer body.

6 mm air inlet 6 or 4 mm air outlet

The regulator setting required depends upon:

• Printhead gap; the distance between the Printhead, in its home
position, and the Print Platen or Print Roller.
• Substrate being used.

3–6 06/08
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.4.1 Air pressure settings

It is recommended that the air pressure be set at the following to
ensure maximum satisfaction:
• SmartDate3i Standard operation – the setting should be 3.5 to
4.5 bar.
• SmartDate3c Standard operation – the setting should be 3.5 to
4.5 bar.
• SmartDate3c with APS enabled – the setting should be 2 to 2.5
bar.
Markem.Imaje suggest that the Operator takes all factors into
consideration prior to setting the air pressure.
CAUTION: Excessive air pressure on installation may cause
premature Printhead damage. Not exercising caution
when setting the air pressure will over stress the
Printhead.

06/08 3–7
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.5 Clutch
SmartDate 3 uses a clutch to compensate for the variations in the
diameter of the ribbons as they are used.
The clutch tension of the SmartDate 3 foil supply is critical for
correct machine operation. Some symptoms of clutch malfunction
such as, persistent foil breakage, foil slack and overlapping prints
may be corrected by adjusting the clutch tension.
The clutch pads are soaked in a light oil, and when new a small
amount of seepage may initially occur after installation. Any excess
oil should be cleaned from the printer after approximately one week
of running.
The torque setting of the clutch should be checked each time the
ribbon is changed or alternatively once a week.
For guidance please refer to the Clutch Set up Procedure in
Section 7 - Setup and Timing Issues.

3.6 Mounting the Encoder (SmartDate3c Only)

For continuous printers, an encoder is required to monitor the speed
of the substrate.
SmartDate 3 requires the encoder to provide:
• 3 pulses per mm of substrate travel.
• The output connects to an NPN open collector output, operating
at 24 V DC.
A typical encoder would be 500 pulses per rev. with a 53.05 mm
tracking wheel. It is essential that the encoder measures the speed
of the substrate at the point of printing, preferably on the actual
substrate.

3–8 06/08
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.7 Locating Print Body and Print Platen/Roller

The mounting brackets will vary from one packaging machine to
another. Some general guidelines for printer installation follow:
Position the print platen or roller such that the product is presented
at a maximum distance of 1.00 mm to 1.5 mm (for SmartDate3i),
0.5 mm to 1.00 mm (for SmartDate3c) from the printhead when in
the set position, for example; when the cassette is fully locked or the
printhead is in the home position. The printhead is self aligning to a
limited amount, but always ensure that it is square to the platen /
roller.

Mode is being used, please ensure that the gap distance is as
accurate as possible.
Add or remove the mounting bracket shims as required.
Note: The air pressure when using APS Mode is significantly less
than with Standard running. (See Compressed Air for
details.)

3–10 06/08
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

The mounting and dimensional requirements of the Printer Body are

shown in the Specifications illustrations. Additional space is required
to interconnect cables, the air line and to allow the printer cassette
to be removed.
Four M6 x 10 mm mounting holes are provided in the rear of the
unit. Optional mounting holes are also provided in the central base
plate.
The required print position on the substrate determines the position
of the Printer Body. Further small adjustments to the print can be
made using move print parameters via the control panel.
Note: Rigid fixing of the printer body is essential to achieve the best
possible print quality. If vibration can be transmitted to the
SmartDate 3, the print quality may be affected.

3.9.4 Unit OK signal

Unit OK relay contacts open when SmartDate 3 is:
Not in a position to print because of a fault, or because it is in SET
mode.

In SET mode
Unit OK is switched off when the key is turned to SET mode.
The contacts should be used to provide an interlock to the overall
control of the packaging machine.
Pins 7 and 8 on 15-way connector are the usual open relay contacts
for Unit OK. The contact is closed when the printer is ready to print.
It is recommended that this signal is always used to prevent
unmarked products being produced.

3.9.5 Communication Signals

A 9-way cable with a D-type connector provides an RS232 / RS485 /
Ethernet or ASCII Comms connection to CoLOS Create Pro or
CoLOS Control (Markem.Imaje-produced software)
The connections are:

Table 3–2 Communication connections

1 RS485 TX+ (output from SmartDate 3)

2 RS232 RX (input to SmartDate 3)
3 RS232 TX (output from SmartDate 3)

5 Isolated 0 V
6 RS485 Isolated +5 VDC
7 RS485 RX+ (input to SmartDate 3)
8 0V
9 RS485 TX- (output from SmartDate 3)

For RS232 operation only pins 2, 3 and 5 should be used. RS485

connection depends on the type of cable being used. For CimLan
Operation 2-wire RS485 is used.

Selecting RS232/RS485 Operation

SmartDate 3 is capable of RS232 and networked RS485 operation.
The mode of operation is selected in software using the Comms
Link parameters. See Section 6 – Restricted Access Mode.

Selecting Ethernet Communications

SmartDate 3 is capable of Ethernet communication with the
appropriate card fitted. As with RS232 and RS485 the mode of
operation is selected in software using the Comms Link parameters.
See Section 6 – Restricted Access Mode.

06/08 3–19
SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION

3.10 Power Up
The main power switch for the machine is on the rear of the
controller unit.
When first switched ON the SmartDate 3 will automatically try to
calibrate the ribbon sensor. This is done to check that the ribbon is
moving at the correct speed and the correct distance.
A Hall sensor is fitted to the printer body and a small magnet is fitted
to the Sensor shaft assembly on the Cassette. When the Cassette is
inserted and secured by closing the latch, the ribbon is driven a fixed
distance. The ribbon, when driven, will rotate the Sensor shaft
assembly. The Hall sensor checks that the magnet on the cassette
sensor shaft revolves the correct number of times.
If the clutch tension for the ribbon is too strong, or if the ribbon is
slipping, the calibration will fail.
If the message CALIBRATION FAILED is displayed, remove the
cassette. Check that the ribbon is threaded correctly and try again,
whilst ensuring that the shuttle is in Home position.
If your SmartDate 3 has been installed correctly and the required
job file has been selected, your printer should now be operational.

3.11 Initial setup

Before operating the SmartDate 3 for the first time, certain machine
software settings will have to be established. These settings will
vary depending on the substrate being used and the speed of
printing.
The choice of operating mode previously discussed in this manual
will also have an impact on how the level of each setting is chosen.
Some general guidelines are listed below with examples of different
operating modes and substrate.
These initial machine settings can be adjusted from the
SmartDate 3 user interface. Full details on how to do this can be
found in Section 6.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

The key features available with the SmartDate 3 include:

• Reduced set up / down time: The printhead data is changed at a
control panel.
• Advanced Print System (APS) - available on the SmartDate3c
only:
a) Allows for greater ribbon saving potential (up to 300%),
and/or:
b) Allows for greater print speeds to be achieved (up to a
maximum of 1500 mm/s), enabling an increase in print output
by 50% (e.g from 1 m/s, to 1.5 m/s of printing).
• Advanced Ribbon Length (ARL) - available both models:
SmartDate 3 now has the capacity for a 900 metre length of
ribbon, thus allowing for fewer ribbon changes, subsequently
resulting in less downtime. SD3i 107 and SD3c 128 - 600 metre.
• Efficient Ribbon Usage: SmartDate 3 automatically controls the
ribbon feed, no manual adjustment is required, minimising ribbon
usage. See Printer Parameters, for further details.
• Self aligning printhead: The print platen/roller does not require
precise alignment to the printhead, therefore reducing the need
for periodic adjustment.
• Continuous Motion Version: SmartDate3c accurate tracking of
the substrate speed and sophisticated control of the printhead
and ribbon feed provides the best possible print quality.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.2 Operating Principals

The two printer types use different methods of operation specifically
designed to suit the running methods of the packaging machines
being used.

4.2.1 SmartDate3i – Intermittent Model

This machine has evolved from the SmartDate2i printer. Whilst
retaining all the original features from its predecessors, it
incorporates the additional feature of Advanced Ribbon Length
(ARL), which allows for a maximum ribbon length of 900 metres.
The SmartDate3i 107
The 107 mm printhead on this variation of the SmartDate 3 allows
for a larger print area to be utilised. The maximum ribbon length
however is limited to 600 mm.
This version is used with intermittent motion packaging machines
and prints onto the material when it is stationary. Moving the
printhead during the dwell time when the packaging material is
stationary prints the information. The SmartDate3i prints text and
bar codes at any position within the 53 mm width by 74 mm length
print area. SmartDate3i uses a thermal printhead and thermal ink
ribbon to print information onto materials held against a flat print
platen. Specific ribbon types are available for printing onto different
materials including, but not limited to: film, laminates, cellophane,
plastics, cartons and labels (for further details on ribbon types,
please contact your local Markem.Imaje Business Centre, or the
MARKEM Web Site: www.markem.com).

The operating sequence is:

1. A Print Go signal triggers the print delay timer.
2. The print delay elapses and the printhead moves into position.
3. The printhead moves along a linear slide and prints the required
information.
4. The printhead retracts.
5. The printhead returns to its home position and the ribbon moves
along ready for the next print.
6. SmartDate3i is now ready for the next print sequence.

4–4 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.2.2 SmartDate3c Continuous (left or right hand) Model

This version of the SmartDate 3 is designed to print whilst on
continuous running substrate. One significant additional feature for
this machine, however, is that it also has the Advanced Print System
facility (APS) which increases print by 50% - from 1 m/s to 1.5 m/s of
printing.
SmartDate3c 128 Continuous (left or right hand) Model
The 128 mm printhead on this variation of the SmartDate 3 allows
for a larger print area to be utilised. The maximum ribbon length
however is limited to 600 mm. APS is not avialable with this model.
This version prints onto moving materials. This makes it the ideal
coder for continuous motion form fill and seal machines and
horizontal flow wrappers. The print speed is matched to the speed of
the substrate, by using a speed monitoring encoder. The
SmartDate3c prints text and bar codes at any position within the 53
mm width by 100 mm length print area. (SD3c 128 - 128 mm x 128
mm) SmartDate3c uses a thermal printhead and thermal ink ribbon
to print information onto materials held against a print roller. Specific
ribbon types are available for printing onto different materials
including, but not limited to: film, laminates, cellophane, plastics,
cartons and labels (for further details on ribbon types, please
contact your local Markem.Imaje Business Centre, or the MARKEM
Web Site: www.markem.com).

The operating sequence is:

1. A Print Go signal triggers the Debounce Encoder distance.
2. The Encoder distance elapses and the printhead moves into
position.
3. The required information is printed. The printhead does not
move. A ribbon shuttle, in the Printer Cassette, is used to match
the ribbon speed to the substrate.
4. The printhead retracts and the shuttle returns to its home
position.
5. SmartDate3c is now ready for the next print sequence.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.3 Principals of Printing

4.3.1 Thermal Transfer Technology

SmartDate 3 machines use Thermal transfer printheads, similar to
the ones used in Fax machines.
Thermal Transfer printers can also operate without ribbon by using
specially treated paper which turns black when heated. This is the
way fax paper reacts.
Overprinters however, almost always use ribbon.
Both SmartDate 3 machines use Thermal transfer printheads for
printing.
Each printhead has a series of heating elements (resistors) along
the print line. These printing dots are 12 per mm and are covered in
a ceramic glaze for protection.
When printing, the printhead is moved out by activating a pneumatic
valve. This causes the printhead to press the ink ribbon against the
substrate or label. The heat from the printhead dots melt the ink and
the pressure of the printhead against the substrate transfers the ink
to the substrate.
SmartDate 3 machines use Stepper Motors for Printhead/Shuttle
motion and Ribbon feed. These stepper motors rotate so that the
linear motion of the printhead/ ribbon is equivalent to 12 steps per
mm.
Printing occurs during each step of the motor drive system.
The print control processor determines which dots to energise and
when to activate them.
For example if:
a) Dots 1 to 12 are energised at steps 1 to 3
b) Dots 4 to 8 are energised at steps 4 to 23
c) Dots 1 to 12 are again energised at steps 24 to 26

The printed image would then look as follows:

12 dots = 1mm

Step 1

Step 3
Step 4

Direction of
Print
PRINT

Step 23
Step 24

Step 26

The resulting character may then be part of the design text or a part
of a Graphic or a Logo. This process happens extremely fast and
the printed character may only take a fraction of a second to print.
For example:
The above character is represented as 26 steps long, just over
2 mm. If the print speed were 100 mm/sec, this character would only
take approximately 2/100 of a second to print.
Note: SmartDate 3 in Hi Speed mode can print at 1000 mm/sec.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.4 Operating Modes

SmartDate 3 has six modes of operation, depending on the printer
type used.
These can be separated into two main groups:

Non-Ribbon Save Modes

Non-Ribbon Save Modes include:
• Normal mode - speeds of up to 600 mm/sec
• High speed mode - speeds of up to 1000 mm/sec
• APS Varying Ratio mode- speeds of up to 1500 mm/sec

Ribbon Save Modes

Ribbon Saving modes include:
• Radial Ribbon Save mode
• Interlace mode
• APS Fixed Ratio mode

The choice of mode will depend on the type of application and the
operator’s main objectives:
• If saving ribbon is the main objective, choose one of the Ribbon
Save mode options.
• If print quality or speed is the main objective, choose one of the
Non-Ribbon Save mode options.

A brief explanation of the different modes follows.

4.5 Printer Specific Print Options

SmartDate 3 Intermittent / SmartDate3i 107

This SmartDate 3 can be set to:

• Radial Ribbon Save Mode
• Hi Speed Mode
• Interlace Mode

SmartDate 3 Continuous
This SmartDate 3 can be set to:
• Standard Mode Operation
• Radial Ribbon Save Mode
• High speed Mode
• Advanced Print System
Note: Hi Speed mode is disabled if APS is selected.

SmartDate3c 128
This SmartDate 3 can be set to:
• Standard Mode Operation
• Radial Ribbon Save Mode

Certain conditions will determine the standard of print quality

achieved:
• The Substrate material being used
• The type of Ink Ribbon being used.
• The Speed at which printing is performed.
• The air pressure setting
• The Printer parameter settings
• The gap between the printhead and roller or platen.

The correct combination of all of these will greatly improve print

quality.

06/08 4–9
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.5.1 Standard Mode Operation

SmartDate 3 transfers ink from the ribbon directly onto the substrate
by means of a thermal transfer printhead.
In this mode the ink removed from the ink ribbon will be equal in size
to the printed image on the substrate.
For example, a 2 mm long print will use 2 mm of ribbon.
This is the normal running mode for SmartDate 3 and will usually
achieve the best print quality results.
The maximum print speed for this mode is 600 mm/sec.

4–10 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.5.2 Hi Speed Mode

This option is available on both SmartDate3i, SmartDate3i 107 and
SmartDate3c printers. It can not be used with SmartDate3c when it
is in APS mode.
The benefit of High Speed mode is that a print speed of up to
1000 mm/sec can be achieved. This is accomplished by reducing
the resolution of the print.
This option is useful when the substrate speed is high and a lower
print resolution is acceptable.
Hi Speed mode is a unique Markem.Imaje feature that allows
printing speeds of up to 1 m/s on the SmartDate 3 (dependent on
the substrate and thermal ribbon used).
Using a unique way of driving the printhead (patent pending),
increased print speeds can now increase maximum speeds
achievable, usually without regard to the thermal ribbon or substrate
used.
When running in Hi Speed mode, print resolution will be lower than
normal (current) operation. However, when enabled, this mode will:
• Increase the possible linear speed up to 1000 mm/s on ideal
applications for SmartDate3c.
• Increase the maximum print speed on most substrates for all
SmartDate 3 models (SmartDate3i, SmartDate3c).
• Increase the speeds obtained with low speed, higher
permanency, resin/ hybrid ribbons on all SmartDate 3 models.
• Increase the possibility of use for low speed coloured ribbons for
all SmartDate 3 models.
All of the above benefits are achieved with pure speed matching so
that SmartDate 3 will maintain the current high reliability.

06/08 4–11
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Hi Speed Options
Hi Speed mode is a menu-selected option.
When DISABLED, the printer runs as standard and produces the full
density, high quality image as expected.
When the mode is ENABLED, you can set the threshold from which
it begins to operate, by setting this threshold from 30 mm/sec to
600 mm/sec.
When Hi Speed mode is selected and the running speed reaches
the selected threshold speed, the printer automatically changes to
Hi Speed mode operation.
Once Hi Speed mode is operating, the resulting print quality is
slightly lower than standard, but it offers all of the above listed
benefits.
For information on how to enable Hi Speed mode, please refer to
Section 6.
The following information is relevant to Hi Speed mode on the
SmartDate 3:

Threshold (ON/OFF)
The DEFAULT setting for HI Speed mode is DISABLED.
When DISABLED, the machine operates in normal operating mode
where the print speed remains constant.
When Hi Speed mode is ENABLED, a threshold speed must be set.
Once Hi Speed mode is enabled, settings such as background
energy levels are adjusted to optimise operation in Hi Speed mode.
However, on certain substrates these energy levels may need to be
manually adjusted to optimise performance.
Contact your Markem.Imaje Business Centre before attempting to
perform these adjustments.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Materials and Applications

Hi Speed mode is designed for applications where a small reduction
in perceived quality is acceptable so the customer may benefit from
high running speeds. Primarily these applications are for simple
Date & Lot type overprinting applications. Hi Speed mode can be
used to print picket fence orientated barcodes, but must not be used
to print Ladder format barcodes.
As for all applications, the customers material type should always be
tested, however testing has proven SmartDate 3 Hi Speed mode to
work well on various materials including: Polypropylene, Polythene,
Premium labels and Laminated films. Hi Speed mode also increases
the performance of the SmartDate 3 on “difficult to print on
substrates” and “Harder to adhere ribbons“.
Hi Speed mode will only operate reliably with Markem.Imaje-
approved grades of Thermal Ribbon.

Normal Speed Print Mode Hi Speed Print Mode

06/08 4–13
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Limitations
The use of Hi Speed mode has major speed benefits to the
customer, however, there are some points of this feature which must
be considered when qualifying an application.
• When Hi Speed mode is selected, the maximum print speed is
1000mm/sec.
• When Hi Speed mode is enabled the print quality will be reduced
from the high quality achieved in normal mode.
• Just as today, where not all applications will achieve 600 mm/
sec, for the new machines not all applications will achieve
1000 mm/sec. Application qualification is required to determine
maximum speed, and the threshold speed at which the threshold
should be set.
• You will not be permitted to print in Hi Speed mode at speeds
lower than 30 mm/s. Printing in Hi Speed mode at very low
speeds can lead to a damaged Printhead.
• Hi Speed mode may reduce the quality of certain bitmaps used.
• Due to the castellation of characters with Hi Speed mode, it is not
recommended to print characters less than 2 mm high. The
BOLD font types will typically provide more consistent results.

4–14 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.6 Interlace Mode

(Available on SmartDate3i and SmartDate3i 107 only)
This is a SmartDate 3 Intermittent printer function which is used to
save ribbon. When Interlace Mode is being used the ribbon is only
advanced every second print, effectively saving 50% of the ribbon
being used. This method of printing does however decrease the
contrast quality of the print, as only half the normal amount of ribbon
is being used to print with.
Interlace mode also has speed limitations - 400mm/sec, and is not
suitable for Barcodes or Graphics for example.
Interlace mode is best suited to Date and Lot type Overprinting
where a small reduction in print quality is acceptable.
Interlace Mode uses each piece of thermal ribbon twice to produce a
reduced density “draft mode” print, and halves ribbon costs, and
doubles the time between ribbon changeovers.

How it works
Interlace mode is a menu selected option. When OFF, the printer
runs as standard producing a full density, high quality image. If
interlace mode is selected (ON), then for the “First Print” a pattern is
used to only transfer half of the ink, giving a reduced contrast print.
For the “Second Print”, the Printhead is energised differently to print
the alternate image. The result being two “draft mode” prints for half
the price of a full density print.

What Interlace Mode

prints look like...

06/08 4–15
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Setting up Interlace Mode

Once interlace mode is turned ON, settings such as background
energy levels are automatically adjusted to optimise operation in
interlace mode.
The settings should be optimised for a wide range of materials
however a reality of interlace mode is that the first and second prints
will differ slightly in contrast. Once the speed is set for the
application, adjustment of the Print Darkness can be used to make
these prints as equal as possible (balance the prints).
Typically, best results have been achieved with the printer set in the
speed range of 150 mm/sec to 250 mm/sec (approx. 6 ”/sec to 10 ”/
sec). The maximum print speed is recommended as no more than
400 mm/sec (15.7 ”/sec). If the first print is much darker than the
second, reduce the Print Darkness. If the first print is much lighter
than the second, increase the Print Darkness.
Only the Print Darkness parameter should be used to balance the
prints. No other settings should be changed to balance the prints.
When Interlace Mode is turned off, background energy levels etc.
are restored to the standard non-interlaced values.
For information on how to enable Interlace mode, please refer to
Sections 6.

4–16 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Materials and Applications

Interlace mode is designed for applications where a small reduction
in perceived quality (reduced contrast) is acceptable so the
customer may benefit from halved running costs and increased
uptime. Primarily these applications are for simple Date & Lot type
overprinting applications. Interlace mode is not designed for bar-
codes, graphics etc. The unique print achieved with Interlace Mode
is however, ideal for applications which require a small amount of
anti-counterfeit security, such as unique numbers for competitions.
The material type should always be tested, however testing has
proven SmartDate3i interlace mode to work well on various
materials including: Polypropylene, Polythene, Premium labels and
Laminated films. Typically, surfaces such as poorly calendared
(rough / porous) paper and card which give poor results with
standard Thermal Transfer Overprinting are not suitable for Interlace
Mode.
Interlace Mode will only operate reliably with Markem.Imaje-
approved grades of Thermal Ribbon.

06/08 4–17
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Limitations
The use of interlace mode has major cost and uptime benefits,
however, there are limitations of this feature which must be
considered when qualifying an application.
1. When Interlace Mode is selected, the maximum print speed
recommended is 400 mm/sec.
2. Ensure the materials are printed at the correct speeds, and that
an acceptable “First” and “Second” print can be achieved.
3. Interlace Mode is not available on the SmartDate3c
4. Due to the lower density, Interlace mode should not be used to
print critical barcodes or automatically readable information.
5. If the information to be printed changes between first and second
prints (e.g. BBE Date increments) then some sections of the
second print may be solid (full density) print rather than the
chequered image. This will not decrease readability.
6. As with SmartDate 3, it is not possible to achieve identical first
and second prints. As the printer “warms up”, depending upon
running speed the balance will change slightly. Also, as
described above, the pattern will change first to second print
giving a small difference.
7. Due to the lower contrast achieved with interlace mode, it is not
recommended to print characters less than 2 mm high. Check
the legend depending upon font style selected. The BOLD font
types will typically provide more consistent results in interlace
mode.

4–18 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.7 Radial Ribbon Save Mode

This option is available on both SmartDate3i and SmartDate3c
printers.
In this mode, the ribbon is advanced only after the whole of the
printable area of the ribbon has been used. For example, if the
ribbon being used is 55 mm wide and each print is 10mm wide,
SmartDate 3 can effectively print five times before advancing the
ribbon. The position of each print however will be different on the
Substrate.
Two methods are available, one for example would print five times
then move the image back to the first position, but with the ribbon
advanced. (similar to an old typewriter) The other would reverse the
order of prints after advancing the ribbon and snake from side to
side on the ribbon.
dependent on the image size, up to eight prints can be performed
across the ribbon width before the ribbon is advanced.
This mode is useful if Lot codes or Best Before End Dates are being
printed and the final position of the text on the Substrate is not an
issue. Using a larger ribbon than normally required will save
downtime.
Radial Ribbon Save can also be used in conjunction with Hi Speed
Mode to achieve print speeds of up to 1000 mm/sec.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.8 Advanced Print System (APS) Mode

This is a feature of the SmartDate 3 Continuous printers and is
used to either save ribbon or achieve acceptable print quality when
the Substrate speeds ramp up above 600 mm/sec.
Note: This function is not available with the SmartDate3c 128
printer.
APS Mode allows the SmartDate 3 to print with the ribbon moving at
a different speed than the Substrate. e.g. The Substrate could be
moving at as much as 1500 mm/sec with the ribbon running at
500 mm/sec. This would represent a ratio of 3 to 1.
This system has two distinct advantages in that the Substrate can
be run at very high speeds and the ribbon used can be as much as
two thirds less than under normal use.
While the ribbon moves at a different speed to the Substrate, the
size of print is still as designed. This is achieved by stretching the
amount of ink removed from the ribbon over a larger area. The ratio
of ribbon saving is selectable in steps of 0.1 up to 3 (times different).
This means that up to three times less ribbon is used than with non
APS mode.
An example of this might be as follows:
• The Image compressed by 2:

A 10 mm long print on the Substrate would only use 5 mm of

ribbon.

• The Image compressed by 3:

A 9 mm long print on the Substrate would only use 3 mm of

ribbon.

4–20 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Three main points must be clearly understood:

1. The print in APS Mode will be fainter than with Normal or Hi
Speed.
2. The higher the Ratio the fainter the print will be as it is using less
ribbon.
3. The correct set up of the SmartDate3c is critical as the print gap
distance and changes in air pressure for example will affect the
print quality.
Note: In situations where the Substrate runs very slowly it is
possible for the ribbon to run faster than the Substrate in
order to achieve a print.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.8.1 APS Modes

There are two options available in APS Mode:
• Fixed Ratio
• Varying Ratio

Fixed Ratio
This option is best used on fixed speed applications. The amount of
ribbon saved will depend on the acceptable level of print density.
The higher the ratio, the more ribbon will be saved but the fainter the
print on the Substrate.
Varying Ratio
This option is generally used to achieve the best print quality when
the Substrate speed is variable.
e.g. The normal running speed is, for example 500 mm/sec but at
times the speed can go as high as 1500 mm/sec
If SmartDate 3 were running in Standard Mode the maximum print
speed would be 600 mm/sec, this would mean that printing would
not be possible when the Substrate speed was higher.
Varying Ratio mode allows the user to set the normal running
speed to any figure up to 600 mm/sec and the prints will be at a 1 to
1 ratio. When the Substrate speed ramps up to higher than 600 mm/
sec the APS mode will automatically compensate by whatever ratio
is necessary to achieve a print.
The Print density will be compromised when APS is activated. The
print quality will not be as good as the normal 1:1 ratio but the
SmartDate would however be able to achieve a print.
The object here is not to save ribbon, but to achieve the best quality
print under the conditions.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

Advanced Print System is a unique Markem.Imaje feature on the

SmartDate3c printer. The Advanced Print System compresses the
image on the ribbon whilst maintaining the original size on the target
material.
How it works
APS works by running the ribbon at a different to the Substrate, and
stretching or spreading the ink from the ribbon over a larger
Substrate area than it would normally.
This is done by compressing the image on the ribbon by setting the
ratio of ribbon speed to Substrate speed. The ratio can be from 1:1
to 3:1 in steps of 0.1
For example:
A ratio of 2:1 would mean that on a print length of 10 mm only 5 mm
of ribbon would be used.
A ratio of 3:1 would mean that on a print length of 9 mm only 3 mm
of ribbon would be used.
From a print quality point of view the larger the ratio, the fainter the
print contrast will be.

Figure 4–2 Image on Substrate

Print Ratios: 1:1 2:1 3:1

06/08 4–23
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

APS not only allows ribbon to be saved but also enables the
SmartDate3c to print at faster speeds.
If SmartDate3c were set to run at a print speed of 500 mm/sec with
a ratio of 3:1 this would enable the Substrate to be run at 1500 mm/
sec. This would obviously be with a reduced print contrast on the
Substrate.
In some applications the normal running speed of the Substrate may
be within the SmartDate3c standard 1:1 print speed range i.e. less
than 600 mm/sec
The Substrate may however sometimes run at higher speeds e.g.
1000 mm/sec for short periods of time.
If this is the case, SmartDate3c would not normally be able to print
at a 1:1 ratio at these higher speeds but could print if using APS.
If the best quality print is the main priority then 1:1 is the best option.
It may however still be acceptable to have a few prints with less
contrast than have no print on the Substrate. This is when APS
Varying Ratio Mode can be used. This is done by running as much
as possible at the normal print speed, but then activating the lowest
APS ratio if the Substrate speed increases.

4–24 06/08
SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

APS is a menu selected option. Two functions are available for

selection:
• Fixed Ratio
• Varying Ratio
The operator must decide which of the two is a priority.
Fixed Ratio is designed to save as much ribbon as possible at the
expense of the contrast of the print.
Varying Ratio is designed to achieve as good print quality as
possible under the Substrate speed conditions.
Enabling the APS feature provides benefits in the following key
areas:
Allows for greater ribbon saving (potential of up to 300%),
Allows for greater print speeds to be achieved (up to a maximum of
1500 mm/s).
Allows for lower print speeds (down to 30 mm/s).
The effect of these options results in less downtime due to fewer
ribbon changes. When using the APS feature there is an alteration
in print density and definition, however, the overall quality of the
printed image remains largely unaffected.

SECTION 4 - MACHINE OVERVIEW

4.8.2 General Advice for Using APS Mode

All forms of APS work by running the print ribbon at a different
speed in relation to the Substrate speed. When the printhead is
moved out during the print cycle, it presses against the apex of the
print roller.
The ribbon and Substrate are deliberately pressed between the
printhead and print roller, but still allowing them to move. Because
the ribbon is moving at a different speed than the Substrate, there is
a tendency for the Substrate to try to pull the ribbon off the supply
reel.
To counteract this, a brake pad is used to stop any excess ribbon
being pulled off the supply reel.
The timing of the brake being activated is “critical” to the operation
of APS. The brake should be activated just prior to the printhead
coming into contact with the Substrate. This timing is adjustable in
the Software parameters.
The distance from the printhead in its home position and its down
position is therefore also extremely important. A bigger gap will
require a longer head out time and an increase in the time before
the brake is activated.
The Default timing of the Brake is set to suit a printhead gap of
0.5 mm - 1.0 mm. This is the ideal gap size for best results with
APS. If for any reason this size gap is not achievable, please contact
your local Markem.Imaje office for instructions on how to alter the
Brake timer parameter.
The following settings are recommended for use with APS mode:
• Print Gap - 0.5 mm - 1.0 mm (Recommended gap)
• Head Out Time - 25 ms
• Print Darkness - 100%
• Air Pressure - 2.0 - 2.5 bar maximum
• Brake Timer - minus 20 ms (Default)

SECTION 5 - MACHINE OPERATION

5 Machine Operation

5.1 Operating Principals

SmartDate3i
The SmartDate3i prints when the substrate or label is stationary.
The printhead is moved out during the dwell time of the packaging/
labelling machine, and then moved across the substrate/label while
printing takes place.
The Intermittent model advances the ribbon during the return
movement of the printhead. The ribbon is only advanced by the
same amount as it prints. For example, if the image is 25mm long,
the ribbon is advance by 25mm (plus any start/end border distance).
This keeps ribbon waste to a minimum.
When the cassette is inserted into the printer body and secured, the
ribbon waste rewind shaft, is connected to the ribbon drive
mechanism. The ribbon supply tension is kept constant by means of
a clutch mechanism on the ribbon supply reel.

06/08 5–1
SECTION 5 - MACHINE OPERATION

SmartDate3c
The SmartDate3c prints while the substrate is moving. In this case
the printhead only moves out to the print position and has no linear
motion.
The Continuous model uses a ribbon shuttle to match the speed of
the substrate. As with the intermittent model, the ribbon waste
rewind spool is connected to the ribbon drive mechanism when the
cassette is inserted and secured. The shuttle transport shafts are
connected to the shuttle carriage, which in turn is driven.
A shaft encoder tracks the substrate speed. The SmartDate3c
matches the shuttle speed accordingly.

SECTION 5 - MACHINE OPERATION

5.2 Printer Cassette

Both the SmartDate3i and the SmartDate3c use a retractable
cassette to house the ribbon supply for the printers. The style of
cassette differs for each model.
The Printer Cassette is used to make the ribbon loading procedure
as easy as possible:

5.2.1 Removing the Cassette

Follow this procedure:
1. Lift the cassette handle and turn the lever on the unit to the
OPEN position.
2. Use the handle to withdraw the cassette.

5.2.2 Removing Waste Ribbon from the Rewind Core

Follow this procedure:
1. Pull the ribbon forward using the Rewind Reel Flange located
below the ribbon.
2. Push the Flange back to its original position.
3. Pull off the ribbon by hand.

5–4 06/08
SECTION 5 - MACHINE OPERATION

5.2.3 Loading a New Ribbon

Follow this procedure:
1. Fit a new waste web core and load a new ribbon following the
web pattern shown inside the Printer.
2. Remove sufficient ribbon from the new roll to make it
unnecessary to pull additional ribbon while the cassette is
partially loaded. This makes loading easier and, in extreme
cases, prevents damage to the Printer Cassette.
3. Ensure that there are no creases in the ribbon by rotating the
rewind by hand.

1. Check that the cassette locking lever is in the OPEN position.
Insert the Printer Cassette by aligning the two guide pins (see the
appropriate webbing diagram) and pressing the unit home.
2. Check that the ribbon passes over the peel bar correctly.
3. Lock the unit shut by turning the locking lever to the CLOSED
position and push the cassette handle back into the cassette.
4. When the cassette is back in position and the keyswitch is turned
to RUN, SmartDate 3 automatically drives the head to remove
any creases and to calibrate the ribbon feed sensor.
5. If the message CALIBRATION FAILED is displayed, remove the
cassette. Check that the ribbon is threaded correctly and try
again, whilst ensuring that the shuttle is in Home position.

Print darkness levels should be set in relation to the print speed.
• For example, if the print speed is high, the print darkness may
have to be raised to achieve good print quality.
• If the print speed is lowered the print darkness should be reduced
accordingly.
As a general rule darkness levels should be kept as low as the line
speed and print quality requirements will allow. This will ensure that
the print-head life will be used to its optimum.

The File Manager option provides access to a

number of file specific transfer features:
Restore File: this allows specific layout, format,
logo or font files to be restored from the
PCMCIA card into the local database. If a
layout or format is selected all related files (e.g.
fonts, logos etc.) will be restored. The files
available are displayed and an option is
provided to overwrite existing files.
Backup File: this option functions in a similar
way to Restore file, and allows individual files to
be copied to the PCMCIA card. Once the file to
be transferred has been selected SmartDate 3
will request the directory to copy the file to.
File The first file in this menu will always be
Manager <Current Parameters>. When this is selected,
the destination directory will be prompted for as
usual. Once a destination is chosen a file called
SmartDate 3 PARAM.INI will be written, this
contains all the current SmartDate 3
parameters in ASCII.INI file format. To restore
parameters, simply select the Restore File in
the same menu. Any parameter file with the.INI
extension will automatically be loaded as a new
set of parameters
Clear Filter/Change Filter: this allows you to
enter a filter that can be used to restrict the files
that are displayed during backup and restore
operations. The filter uses MS-DOS style wild
cards e.g. A* would display all files starting with
A.

as it allows the date to always be set to the
required offset put into the field.

Example
UPDATE A layout has a BBE date (dd/mm/yy format), an
EVERY DAY offset of 1 year, and the mode to update every
AT 00:00 day at 00:00. At 00:00 on 11/07/97 the BBE will
update from 11/7/98 to 12/7/98.

Note: If the BBE format is MMM YY, it will still

update every day at 00:00, but you will
