• Stability of bracing and tie-in;

• Stability if shoring, form work and supports;

• Surface must be cleaned;

• Exposed edges of concrete shall have a 20mm chamber unless otherwise noted on
details;

• Form work must be coated with oil or oil-free form sealer when concrete surface is
to be painted;

• Stability and position of control joints;

• Damping (without excess water remaining in formwork).

5.2.3 Reinforcement:

5.2.3.1 Detailing, fabrication and tagging of reinforcing steel shall conform to ACI 315.

5.2.3.2 Reinforcing bars shall be the correct size, spacing and adequately supported.

5.2.3.3 Reinforcing bars shall be secure against displacements within tolerances specified

in ACI 318.

5.2.3.4 Placing of reinforcement shall conform to ACI301 shall be within tolerances

specified in the contract specifications.

5.2.3.5 Hooks, splices and embedded shall be in accordance with ACI 318, or as shown
on the design drawings.

5.2.4 Embedded Items:

5.2.4.1 Check that all embedded items such as sleeves, inserts, anchor bolts and water
stops are installed in accordance with design drawings and supported against
displacement.

5.2.4.2 Anchor bolts sizes and locations shall be within tolerances detailed on the
drawings and specifications.

5.2.4.3 Items to be embedded must be clean and shall be hot dipped galvanized in
accordance with ASTM A123 or coated with zinc rich epoxy primer in accordance
with APCS-1C of SAES-H-101.

5.3 Approval of Pour

5.3.1 Saudi Aramco shall be requested to conduct a joint inspection with ALM QC
Inspector upon receipt of the 24 hour inspection request notice, to ensure that all
requirements have been complied with and accepted prior to pouring.

5.3.2 Check provision for placement of concrete, provision for vibrating concrete (per ACI
requirements), and placement schedules.

5.4 Concrete Inspections and Testing

5.4.1 All delivered concrete must be checked for compliance with approved concrete mix
design and contract specifications.

5.4.2 Inspection and testing requirements shall be in conformance to technical

specification.

5.4.3 Ensure that tests on compressive strength, slump, unit weight, fresh concrete
temperature and air temperature are performed by the approved Independent
Testing Laboratory.

5.5 Concrete Placement Inspection

5.5.1 Concrete placement to be in accordance with Saudi Aramco Specification and per
provision of ACI 304R-89.

5.5.2 Conveying, depositing and consolidating of concrete shall conform to ACI 318 and
Project Specification.

5.5.3 Re-tempering of concrete after placement is prohibited.

5.5.4 Ensure that proper vibration is carried out while placing concrete. Vibrators shall not
be used to move concrete inside forms.

5.5.5 Raking is prohibited.

5.5.6 Free dropping of concrete from height of more than 1meter is prohibited. Concrete
shall be deposited as near as possible in its final position to avoid segregation due to
re-handling or flowing.

5.5.7 When large concrete pours are necessary, ensure that an approved programs of
operation has been prepared that will assure all placing if concrete will maintain fresh
and soft edges, and minimize cold joints caused by delays or equipment failure.

5.5.8 Ensure concrete is not mixed or poured under uncontrolled freezing conditions.

5.6 Finishing Inspection

5.6.1 Ensure that formed surfaces have an as-cast finish. Where surface repairs are
required, all honeycombed areas shall be cut back to solid concrete true the line
and angle, and angle shall be formed and filled with concrete of the same strength
as specified. The Contractor (ALM) shall submit a repair procedure prior to carrying out
any repair works.

5.6.2 Conduct all other finishing inspection as required and specified by contract
drawings, and project specification.

5.7 Curing Inspection

5.7.1 Concrete curing shall be based on the requirement of ACI 308-81, and Saudi Aramco
Specification.
5.7.2 Water for curing shall be proven potable quality. Maximum total dissolve solids
shall not exceed 1000ppm.
5.7.3 Water curing shall be used to keep horizontal or sloping unformed surfaces of
concrete continuously wet. Water spraying, wet sand or water-saturated fabrics can
be used for curing.
5.7.4 Burlap must be free of injurious amounts of substances such as sugar or fertilizer that
do harm the concrete or caused discoloration. Burlap should also be thoroughly
rinsed in water to remove soluble substances or to make it more absorbent. The
heavier the burlap the more water it will hold and less frequently it will need to be
wetted.
5.7.5 Burlap Strips shall be lapped by half widths to give greater moisture retention and
aid in preventing displacement during high wind or heavy rain. The saturated
burlaps shall be covered with a plasticized sheet vapor barrier, minimum 6mils in
thickness.
5.7.6 For vertical and other formed surfaces, after the concrete has hardened and the
forms are still in place, the form ties may be loosened and water should be
supplied to run down on the inside of the form as necessary to keep the concrete
wet. Immediately following form removal, the surfaces should be kept continuously
wet by water spray or water saturated fabric.
5.7.7 Curing should start as soon as the concrete hardened sufficiently to prevent surface
damage and should be continuous until the compressive strength has reached 70%
of the specified strength but not less than 7 days after placement as described in
ACI 308 and project Specification.
