Signposting Language - showing how the presentation stages relate to each other

You should be using signposting expressions throughout your presentation to make it clear how one part
transitions to the next and therefore provide coherence.

Below are some signposts used during presentations. What is the function of each signpost? Put them in
the correct box. There are 2 examples for each function (there should be 3 examples in each box when you
complete the exercise).

1. Introducing the 2. Finishing a topic 3. Starting a new 4. Giving an

(used before ‘starting a
subject new topic’) topic example

e.g. This morning we are e.g. We’ve just looked at e.g. Let me turn now to ... e.g. A good example of
going to … …. this is ...

6. Handing over to
5. Summarising another member 7. Ordering 8. Rephrasing a
and concluding (in group information main point

remind you of some of relates to (...) and will be next… after that… finally is...
the issues we’ve covered presented by (NAME)

Put the 16 signposts into the correct box according to their function.

“I want to start by…” “Now, we’ll move on to...” “Let me put that another way”

“I will now hand over to (NAME) who will…” “To illustrate this point, …”

“Firstly...secondly...thirdly….lastly” “OK. So let’s recap on..”

“That’s all I have to say about …” “Let’s now look at..”

“Well, I've told you about ….” “Let’s summarise briefly what we’ve looked at”
