Module 1, Lesson 1

TEAM SPORTS - VOLLEYBALL

Introduction:

Volleyball is an enjoyable activity for the beach or the park. The game is
played by two team of six players, with up to six substitutes allowed in a squad.
A net is fixed across the middle of a court eighteen meters long and nine meters
wide. Two flexible antennae mark the extremes between which the ball must pass
over the net. Play starts by one player serving the ball over the net from behind
the base line. When the ball has passed over the net, the receiving team may play
the ball three times before they must pass it back over the net. Each player is
only allowed to touch the ball once. The object of the game is to force the ball
down onto to the floor of the opponent’s court, or to put them under so much
pressure that they are unable to return the ball. In volleyball, if the ball does not
go back over the net, the opposition wins a point. After each time a team wins the
ball back from the opposition each player rotates one position clockwise. This
rotation is a special feature of the game and it means that all players must play
both in the front line and the back line. A team wins a set by scoring 25 points
with a two point lead and wins the match by winning three out of five sets.

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

Volleyball was originated by William J. Morgan of Holyoke, Massachusetts,

U.S.A. in 1895. Upon experimenting this game Mr. Morgan did not realize that the
results produce a sports which
become popular not only in U.S.A.
but all over the world. He was
merely hunting for a game for
elderly men because those
available were too much strenuous
and required too much space and
equipment. Using tennis as the
basis for his new game, he raised
the net, used an inflated rubber
basketball bladder in place of a
tennis ball and substituted the
hands for the tennis racket. This combination not proving entirely satisfactory, the
originator next used a basketball and a higher net. The basketball has to be
discarded because of its weight and so Mr. Morgan replaced it with a smaller and
a lighter ball which was made up according to his expectation.

Formerly known as
“MINTONETTE”, this game was
played by means of hitting the ball
with the use of a long handled
racket while the ball is still on top of
the net which measure 6 feet and 6
inches high. It played innings as a
way of scoring and any number of
players can play. The court
measured 25 meters wide and 50
meters long.

The new was readily adapted
in many YMCA across the country
and experiments were continuously
carried on with the aim, to improve
it. Ultimately these experiments
determined the size of the court and
the height of the net number of
players and various other details. All
of these were incorporated into the
first volleyball and rule book edited
by Dr. George J. Fisher and
published by the American Sports
Publishing Co. in 1917. The first
YMCA volleyball tournament was
sponsored in 1922 at Brooklyn, New
York, with Pittsburg, Pennsylvania,
carry off the honors among the
twenty three competing teams. Each
team composed of eleven different
states. In 1927, the First National
AAU Tournament was held at Buffalo;
New York and the Buffalo Club took
the championship honors. The ruling
body at the present time in the
United Volleyball Association.

Volleyball was introduced in

Asia in 1900 in Calcutta, India by Dr.
Gray, the Director of YMCA in
Calcutta. And in 1903 it was
introduced in Shanghai, China.
After several years it was
introduced in Japan.
In 1910, this game was
finally introduced in the
Philippines by Elwood Brown,
the Director of YMCA

Philippines, in Manila. After a few years, volleyball became instant popular not
only in Manila but throughout the country. In 1913, a memorable event was held
in Manila when the Philippines hosted the Far East Games where the host country
won the championships for both men and women. The first National open
volleyball championship was held in 1921 at the Miracle Gymnasium. The Miracle
won the championship for men while the Philippine Normal School won the
championship for women. Volleyball was first played internationally during the
