 POETRY: SUBJECTIVE
1. What happens in Autumn?
Ans:- In the Autumn season, plants and
trees are filled with flowers and fruit.
Greenery adds beauty in nature. It is really
a pleasant season. Many kinds of birds,
fruit etc can be seen in this season. It is
not second to the spring.
2. What did the fire hymn say to the poet?
Ans:- The fire hymn said to the poet that
he was forgiven. so the poet decided not
to commit such a sin again in his life.
3. How would the poet in “Soldier” like to
be remembered if at all he dies in the
battle? (How does the “Soldier” like to be
remembered after his death?)
Ans:- Here the poet wants that the land
where his body is buried after his death,
will be of England. He must be
remembered with his country’s name
because he loves his country very much.
4. Why and how did the snake come out
of the hole/fissure?
Ans.- It was a very hot day and the snake
was very thirsty. So it came out of the
hole/fissure to drink water. It came by

Mare. Here the poet says that beauty is

"An Epitaph" composed by a great poet,

used to move at that place but she spent

more now. The poet thinks that she was
the most beautiful lady that ever was born
in the west Country. He is really very sad
and thinks for the lady whom he loves
very much.

“Sweetest Love, I Don’t Goe”, composed
by a great metaphysical poet, John Donne.
Here the poet says that a man becomes
weak when his fortune does not favour.

Ans :- These lines have been taken from
“Sweetest Love I Don’t Goe”, Composed
by a great poet, John Donne”. Here the
poet has used hyperboles to express his

neither sense nor desire. He thinks that he
has everything so he can do it very well.

the poem “Fire Hymn”, composed by K.N.

(i)“My GrandMother’s House” has been
composed by Kamala Das. In this poem,
the poetess described her grand-mother’s
house where she received much love from
her grand-mother. Here the poetess
remembers her grandmother’s house and
her love. She says that now her
grandmother is no more and she is far
from her house but there is a complete
picture of everything in her mind. She says
that there will be complete silence and
darkness in the house. She thinks that
snakes may be moving among the books.
She was so young in her childhood that
she could not read those books at that
time. The poetess wants to go there and
have a look from the window. She feels
the frozen air and imagines that the
brooding dog may be behind her bed-
room’s door. She says that nobody can
believe that she used to live in that house,
but she is proud of it. According to her,
she can’t receive such love at strangers'
door. She loses herself in her own
memories. So we can say that she loves
her grand- mother’s house very much and
she can't forget it.
(ii) Fire-Hymn has been composed by
Keki.N. Daruwalla. In this poem, the poet
expressed his views on the burning ghat
that was on the bank of the river. The
scene was very fearful, so the persons
were frightened to see the cruelty of the
redness of the fire. According to him, the
fire burnt most of the parts of the dead
body but left some parts. Those parts were
half-burnt. The poet felt that it was the
immoral behaviour of the fire. After
sometime, the poet began to repent to see
the half-burnt parts when his father hinted
to see them. Being a Parsi, he shouldn't
send his first born child to the fire when
he died. He did so because the tower of
silence was very far from there. He
considered fire as God. He repented for
his sin. He felt that he did it against his
religion and he decided not to do that work
again in future. After sometime, he felt that
he was forgiven. So we can say that he
has showed his religious sentiment in this
poem.
(iii) “Snake” has been composed by D.H.
Lawrence. In this poem, he described a
snake. According to the poet, a snake
came to water-trough to drink water. It was
July and a very hot day. The poet was
also thirsty, so he went there to take
water. Suddenly he saw the snake and
stopped there. He waited there for some
time. He began to enjoy the activities of
the snake. The snake was yellow- brown
cobra. It looked at him vaguely then began
to sip water with straight mouth. It drank
softly through its gums. After sometime, the
poet thought of killing it because it was
poisonous; but he did not decide to do it.
He thought that he was not cowardice so
he should kill it After sometime, he hit it
with a clumsy log. But the snake entered
the black hole. After that, the poet
regretted for it. He thought that he did
wrong. He should not do this type of act.
The Snake seemed to the poet like a king
in exile. He wished that it should come
again.
(iv) “The Soldier” has been composed by
Rupert Brooke. It is a good sonnet that is
full of patriotism. Here, the poet expresses
his feelings on his country. Rupert Brooke
is a soldier and he goes in the war. He
thinks if he dies, and his body is buried
there, then that place will be also the
place of England forever because his body
of England is buried there. He says that
his country has given him birth, made him
matured and given flowers to love, rivers
to wash, ways to move, blessings of the
sun and fresh air to breathe etc. He thinks
if there is no war in England or in any
other country then it will be like the
heaven. He is proud of England and the
gentleness of his Country- men. Really,
this poem is full of patriotism.
(v) “Now the leaves are falling fast” has
been composed by W.H. Auden. In this
poem, the poet expresses the frustration
inherent in human life. He says that man
does not fulfil his all desires but he has to
die one day. Here, the poet gives the
example of falling leaves from the tree. He
says that leaves begin to fall fast in the
autumn season and the flower will not last
long. It means that their life ended. It
shows that life-cycle is like the prams that
go rolling on. The poet finds the same
thing in human life. One day the
messenger of death comes and takes us
away from the world. Everybody has to
die. After death, all go to the grave. White
water-fall, mountains etc look like the
travellers in the end of life. So the poet
says that in the last stage of life, the old
man feels loneliness. He becomes inactive
and dies.

written by H.E. Bates. This story shows the
tragedy of those parents who put too much
trust on their child. The writer also says to
us not to leave everything to God to solve.
This is the story of Johnson and his lovely
son. Johnson was a simple farmer. he had
taken some land from Sanders on annual
rent. He was hard working but believed too
much in fate. He had only one son named
Benjy. He was dull and unintelligent. The
doctor advised to keep Benjy engaged in a
work. so Benjy's father brought some hens
for Benjy in order to keep him busy.
Gradually Benjy learnt all tricks of
business. He started to earn money by
selling eggs. And he deposited much
money in the bank. He bought that land
from Sanders and get married a girl
named Florence. Florence's behavior about
Benjy's parents was not good. She
poisoned his ears against his parents.
Benjy therefore drove them into the town
by small ford van. Now they had nothing
to live. Thus, the writer has shown how a
simple-minded son drives his parents into
the town and becomes cunning.
(ii) “How free is the Press” is a good
essay which has been written by Dorothy
L. Sayers. In this essay, she focussed on
the misuse of press. According to her, the
press should be handled for the welfare of
people as well as the nation. It should not
be restricted. The press should not be
handled by the politicians. It should give
the fact related to the government, politics,
society, crime etc. But there should be
some control also over it. Now-a-days,
editorial policy depends on two factors.
First-the interest of the advertisers, second-
the wealth of the owner of the press. The
news-maker never writes against the
advertisers. Press is quite free in Great
Britain but there is no complete freedom in
other countries. There is political pressure
over the mind of the editors so they can’t
give the correct information. But press is
the source of imparting knowledge also. At
last, we can say that the press should be
with healthy opinion and real freedom; but
the press is not completely free these
days. The public should make it powerful
and fair.
(iii) “Ideas that have helped mankind” is a
good essay, written by Bertrand Russell. In
this essay, he focussed on the ideas that
have helped mankind. According to the
writer, ideas made man powerful. By the
help of ideas, man became intelligent. He
increased his population. Man began to
use his brain-power and he invented and
discovered many things. He says that
ideas and inventions stopped deaths due
to starvation. But man’s qualities have not
raised his moral standard. These qualities
made them civilized and more friendly to
the people. Ideas divided the world and
increased war and bloodshed. Man wants
to overcome fear, worry, starvation etc. He
is more excited than animals and he does
not control himself like animals. Man learnt
"language" and discovered discovered fire
also then he became more powerful. Fire
was used to keep animals away. Man
learnt how to worship animals. He started
to tame animals, do agricultural work but
stopped wandering. At last, he says that
man has discovered many things but he
has to find out more things so that he can
make his life peaceful and happy in its
real sense.
(iv) 'Indian Civilization and Culture' has
been written by Mahatma Gandhi. In this
essay, he described the importance of
Indian Civilization . He says that Indian
Civilization has kept its basic character
very safe till now. It is unique and it
cannot be beaten in the world. Rome,
Greece, China and many other countries
left their own ancient civilization and
accepted western civilization. The people of
those countries believe in materialism, but
Indian Civilization did not change. It is
really said that our mind is a restless bird,

want to live in cities and they believed in
"Home Rule". The Indians believe in

(v) "A Marriage Proposal" is a short drama
that has been written by Anton Chekhov, a
Russian writer. In this drama, he presented
a comedy. Choobookov was a land owner.
He was a very good person. He always
wanted to welcome his guest. He had a 25
years old daughter. Her name was Natalia.
Her grandfather wrote his property to her
before his death. Their neighbour was
Lomov who wanted to marry Natalia. He
wanted Natalia’s hand for marriage. At first,
he talked about general matter then he

meanwhile, Lomov began to think about his
ox-meadows. When Natalia came, he was
talking about it to her father. Then Natalia
also claimed that it was her meadow. Both

force him to call him. When he was called,
he began to say again about it. They
praised their own dogs. They continued
their quarrelling and felt weakness. After
sometime, Lomov fell down. Natalia thought
that he might have died. She blamed on
her father. Her father was also nervous.
He wanted to cut his own throat. Natalia
accepted his proposal. Choobookov
became happy. So we can say that this
drama is very interesting.
(vi) "An Artist"/"The Artist" is a short story
which was written by Shiga Naoya. In this
story, he described a talented Japanese
boy, named Seibei. Seibei was a twelve-
year old boy. He was a student of primary
school. He had interest in collecting gourds
and doing some art on them. He continued
his work on gourds to make them lovely.
But his father wanted to make him a
learned man. One day, he saw a five-inch
long gourd and bought it for ten Sen from
an old woman. He came with it and began
to work to give a lovely image. One day,
he was busy in polishing it under the desk
in the class; but his teacher saw it and
seized it by scolding him. He gave it to
the porter and complained to his mother.
When his father knew, he gave him a
sound beating and forbade him to do so in
future. He began painting pictures; later his
father began to scold him for painting. On
the other hand, the porter sold it to the
curio-dealer for fifty yen. Later it was sold
to a wealthy collector for 600 yen. So we
can say that Seibei's father should not
damage his talent by forbidding him to give
the lovely image.

is divided into two dialects - (i) East

approach. It was called "Dark Age." Latin
and Scandinavian were two major
influences in old English.
