When You Are The General Evaluator 1
When You Are The General Evaluator 1
As the General Evaluator, you are responsible for the Evaluation segment of the meeting. This
includes asking for the Table Topics Evaluator to evaluate the Table Topics speeches, asking the
individual evaluators to evaluate each prepared speech, calling for reports from the Timer, Ah-
Counter, Grammarian and Parliamentarian and evaluating the entire meeting yourself. Your
evaluation of the meeting can include those parts of the meeting covered by another person’s
report, if you feel you can add something important that was not mentioned. Particularly, you
should comment on the job done by the Presiding Officer, the Toastmaster of the Meeting and
the Table Topics Master as well as the Table Topics and Prepared Speech Evaluators. This
should be done in a helpful, supportive manner. Compliment them on what they did well and
also mention those areas in which they have opportunity for improvement.
After hearing the evaluations from the Table Topics Evaluator and the Evaluators of the
prepared speeches, call for a vote for the Best Evaluator.
Attached is a checklist for your use during the meeting, to remind yourself of some of the many
factors you should consider. However, do not simply read the checklist in giving your
evaluation. Select from the checklist only those items on which you feel you should comment;
those things that were done especially well or which might need improvement. And, do not
limit yourself to the items on the checklist.
As General Evaluator, here is your opportunity to make suggestions you feel will improve the
efficient running of the meetings. However, it would be improper to suggest changes that are
not in accordance with the Toastmasters program, a program which has proven for more than
90 years to be very effective. Your suggestions should be within the framework of the
Toastmasters program.
In any event, your suggestions for improvement should not be stated in a dictatorial manner,
but as your personal opinion that you are offering to the Club for its consideration in an effort to
improve the effectiveness of the Toastmasters program. (Your maximum time for evaluation of
the meeting in general may be 5 minutes).
At the conclusion of your remarks, say “This concludes the evaluation part of the program. I
now return the control of the lectern to the Toastmaster of the meeting.”

12. It was a great honor for me to be the General Evaluator. It is now time to invite the Toastmaster
back and I hand over the control of the lectern. Mr. Toastmaster ------------------------------------------
