I. INTRODUCTION & RATIONALE

Verbal Bullying

Students mostly spend their days in school. With more than five hours and five days
a week, students are expected to discover and explore new things and knowledge in
their whole school years. Students also make friends and interact with their peers within
the learning institution. Each of them has their unique qualities, and therefore receive
a variety of comments from everyone. But students cannot please everyone, and many
people have so much to say. Verbal bullying is not just about telling people terrible
comments, but assuming an “unfair” quality of theirs is their whole identity as a whole
person. Verbal bullying in schools is everywhere and it erodes a student’s self esteem
which can affect their academic performances. To some it’s just teasing, but it’s different
for everyone. Hurtful comments often stunt a student’s confidence , which make him or
her stand on the crowd insecurely. After all, people’s hearts and minds are different
from one another, and so is their strengths and weaknesses.

Physical and mental pain tolerance differ in each individual. Most people can ignore
criticisms and mind their own businesses, but there are some that are sensitive. These
students are the easiest target of verbal bullying in their school

Self-esteem

Self-esteem plays a vital role for a student to do well in school. It boost’s someone’s
will to do well in anything that requires confidence and strength. A student’s confidence
reflects how he or she socializes, and how people interact with them. It shows someone’s
strengths, and how they deal with criticisms. To be able to stand in front of the whole
class, it takes a lot of guts and confidence. In order to do so a student has to be
confident. Having a healthy amount of self-esteem can help students to believe in
themselves, and use their own abilities with confidence. It improves the quality of life
and the well being of the students.

Therefore, it is difficult to have a low self-esteem. A student with no confidence to her

or himself can easily get scared, anxious, and expect terrible comments in almost every
minute. They become doubtful of themselves and their own perception, and instead
listen to the opinions of people. Students with low self-esteem don’t have full control
over their life.

a.) Global
According to Westchester Park Pediatrics (WPP), all over the world, children
face different forms of bullying every day. The United Nations reports that one
out of three children worldwide gets bullied at least once a month. The most
reported from the article of DoSomething.org, verbal bullying is the most reported
case with the rate of 79%. Any type of bullying usually starts with verbal abuse.
b.) National
According to Sharon (2022), the Philippines has a very long history verbal
bullying, and it’s a serious problem that affects many children and teenagers.
From the name-calling, sexual harassments to the criticisms.

c.) Local
Verbal bullying is a pressing issue that has garnered significant attention,
particularly in the context of Davao City. As reported by the Davao City Health
Office, it stands as a major concern, permeating nearly every school within the
city (NR Galabo L, 2019).

Self-esteem is a big part of a student’s life. How they’re treated change their
perception. Good comments boost’s their confidence and verbal bullying distorts their
perception of themselves. It lowers someone’s self-esteem and low confidence their
academic performance is badly affected. Verbal bullying affects the child’s mental,
physical, and spiritual state. They become meek, anxious, and they overthink any
action. This causes them to stay silent and participate less in school activities.
In this study, the researchers aim to know the negative effects of verbal bullying to
the self-esteem of grade 8 students in Dumoy National High School that affects their
self-esteem as a student, and as an individual.

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

This sections shows the related literature and studies of the recent study taken from
the published studies, articles, and the internet.

According to the study by Suci Perwita Sari et al. (2021), verbal bullying is an act of
violence through negative and painful comments that can lower the self-esteem of a
person. Verbal bullying can be characterized by throwing insults, calling someone
something else, and making them believe that one “bad” quality they have is their whole
identity as a whole person. Verbal bullying among high school students in particular is
a problem that has received widespread attention globally, according to Le Quang Son
et al. (2021). Their study reveals that students are aware of the concept of verbal bullying
and its impact on their behavior. But the results also show that the majority of high
school students don’t know how to deal with verbal bullying, both in experiencing and
witnessing it. The findings of this study also showed the effectiveness of organizing clubs
and intervention in raising awareness about the verbal bullying. The results of the
survey conducted for this study that 96.7% students are interested in reading the
handbook of bullying prevention, and the rest 3.3% are not interested.

The mostly reported cause of people experiencing verbal violence is because of their
physical appearances. The results and conclusions of the article by Morales, D.X.,
(2018) shows that the risk of being verbally bullied was significantly greater for the
overweight/underweight, and those who are dark in skin color. Other causes followed
such as: family socioeconomic status, the child’s academic performance, the student’s
sexuality, and age.

Self-esteem is how people value and perceive themselves. It’s based on the opinions
and beliefs about oneself, which can feel difficult to change. People might also think of
this as self-confidence (Mind.org, 2022). It is important in order to believe in oneself and
students are able to take risks with their own capabilities. However, according to
Kendra, C. (2022), having self-esteem that is too low or too high can be problematic. A
balanced and healthy level of self-esteem is enough to influence a person’s motivation
and improve the overall quality of life.

According to Dewi, el at.(2022), self-esteem has a big influence on student’s ability

to do something. For example, like how he or she stands and speaks at the front of the
classroom reflects how much self-esteem they have. Students having low self-esteem
find it difficult to pursue their goals and maintain a healthy perception of themselves.

The conclusions of the study by Garan (2023) verbal bullying can be extremely
damaging to an individual’s self-esteem. Its effect is not only the humiliation of being
bullied but also, damages the confidence of oneself, making them doubt their abilities,
appearance, and worth. This affects the students’ academic performances, their mental
health, and their well-being. The student may get discouraged and participate less in
school. Their humiliation as a victim doesn’t stay behind in schools, bet they will carry
a heavy weight into their homes. There are suggestions that verbal bullying in childhood,
especially at the hands of a parent, other trusted adult, or friends, can have long-lasting
effects, resulting in low self-esteem and a poor self-image (PositiveAction., 2023).The
effects of verbal violence can last up to years, mostly from someone close. One of the
worst cases of verbal bullying is from the case study of Mariposa County Unified School
District, Defendants (T.G.,2020) which tells the experiences of a black-American child
who became a victim of race-based bullying. He was called names, and slurs for being
black. The effects of verbal abuse became worse as he started to get nightmares, and
reduced appetite. His parents eventually pulled him from school when his situation was
still overlooked.

According to the article of justsayyes.org (2019), in worse cases a child can self-
harm, indulge in substance use, and other extreme acts. It is possible for a student to
perform such things if the verbal abuse they experience is unbearable.
