Grade: 10 Subject: SCIENCE

Quarter/ FIRST Week No: 2 Session No. 2

Semester:
I. OBECTIVES
Content Standard The learners demonstrate an understanding of: the relationship
among the locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and
mountain ranges.
Performance Standard The learners shall be able to:
1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during
earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions
2. suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government
efforts in reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and
volcanic eruptions
Learning Competencies The learners should be able to:
1. describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and major mountain belts;
Code: S10ES –Iaj-36.1
Knowledge To discuss the implication of the presence of active volcanoes
and mountain ranges in an area.
Skills To cite places where active volcanoes and mountain ranges
can be found.
Attitude To cite precautionary measures during volcanic eruption.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparation Let the learners use the activity sheet the used the previous
day as well as the different maps.

B. Motivational Ask the following Review questions:

Question - How are earthquakes distributed on the map?
- Where are they located?
- Where are places with no earthquakes?

C. Activity Let the 3 other groups: Volcanologists, Montologists and

Orologists groups assigned to the Map of Active Volcanoes
and Mountain ranges present their work in front of the class.
D. Analysis Ask the following questions:
- How are volcanoes distributed?
(Ans: Volcanoes are not randomly distributed. Majority of them
are found along the edges of some continents.
- Where are they located?
(Ans: Majority are found along the edges of some continents,
particularly in the western coast of North and South America,
East and South East
Asia.)
-Based on the map, state a country that is unlikely to

experience a volcanic eruption?
Answer: Answers may vary
-Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters
with the location of volcanoes around the world.
(Ans: Earthquake epicenters and volcanoes are both
situated at the same locations.)
- How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with
the distribution of earthquake epicenters and volcanoes?
(Ans: Mountain ranges are found in places where volcanoes
and/or earthquake epicenters are also located.)
- What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing
Earth’s lithosphere
into several plates?
(Ans: Geologic activities such as seismicity (occurrence of
earthquake),
volcanism and mountain formation are the basis of scientists
in dividing Earth’s lithosphere.

E. Abstraction
- Mountain ranges are found in places where volcanoes
and/or earthquake epicenters are also located.

F. Application Why do you think it is important for us to identify areas which

are prone to earthquakes?
If you are living near Canlaon Volcano, what precautionary
measures would you do?
G. Practical It is important to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes
Applications of so that necessary precautions could be done if ever you’re
Concepts and living in one of those places.

H. Generalization  Plates are large pieces of the upper few hundred
kilometers of Earth that move as a single unit as it
floats above the mantle.
 The plates are in constant motion. As they interact
along their margins, important geological processes
take place, such as the formation of mountain belts,
earthquakes, and volcanoes.
I. Evaluation Answer briefly:

1. How are volcanoes and earthquakes related?

Ans: Some, but not all, earthquakes are related to volcanoes.

For example, most earthquakes are along the edges of
tectonic plates. This is where most volcanoes are too.
However, most earthquakes are caused by the interaction of
the plates not the movement of magma.

2. Where do earthquakes generally occur?

Ans: Earthquakes often occur at plate boundaries (the edges

of plates).
When plates slide past each other (transform boundaries),
there are often earthquakes because pressure builds up as
plates push against each other.

Some earthquakes occur due to volcanic activities specifically
in areas where there is a presence of volcanoes.
