USES OF “WOULD”
Speaking goal 1: Make polite requests.
1. A: Would you open the door please, Mrs. Lassiter?
B: By all means, dear.
Speaking goal 2: Talk about past habits
EXAMPLE 1:
FACT: When Michael Jackson was about 11 years old, he used to go to TV
shows very often to perform with his brothers.
SAID ANOTHER WAY: When Michael Jackson was about 11 years old, he
would go to TV shows very often to perform with his brothers.
Speaking goal 3: Express purpose in the past
SO (THAT) + SUBJECT + WOULD + BASE FORM OF THE VERB

EXAMPLE 1:
FACT: Jonathan was studying hard because he wanted to pass his test easily.
SAID ANOTHER WAY: Jonathan was studying hard so (that) he would pass
his test easily.
Speaking goal 4: Talk about imaginary situations in the present
Fact: Kylie wants to travel to Mexico for her birthday, but the problem is that
she doesn’t have enough money.
SAID ANOTHER WAY: Kylie would travel to Mexico for her birthday if she had
enough money.

EXAMPLE 1:
FACT: Chris fell off his bed last night. The problem was that he was moving
too much.
SAID ANOTHER WAY: If Chris hadn’t moved so much, he wouldn’t have fallen
off his bed.
Speaking goal 6: Express a desire for a change in someone’s annoying habit.
EXAMPLE 1:
FACT: Mary is always complaining about everything and she doesn’t even
help with the school projects. That’s really lame.
SAID ANOTHER WAY: I wish she would start helping us with the school
projects.
Speaking goal 7: Report what someone else has said (reported speech: past
of Will)
EXAMPLE 1:
DIRECT SPEECH
Jason: I’ll pick you up at 9:00, Scarlett.
REPORTED SPEECH
Jason told Scarlett he would pick her up at 9:00.
Speaking goal 8: Express past unwillingness (past refusal)
FACT: Tom grounded his children because they didn’t want to do their
homework.
SAID ANOTHER WAY: Tom grounded his children because they wouldn’t do
their homework.

you as soon as there is a job vacancy.
