ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON The word ‘charity’ is written on the board and students asked what
the word means to them. Students discuss their ideas with their
talk partner(s) then collect responses. Students are asked to read
through the questions and a short discussion are initiated.

1.Students pay attention to the main picture on the page and they
asked to tell what they can see. Students asked to guess why he
might be doing this. Students read through the text and underline
any unknown words at the same time. Students are asked the

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students play a noun game. Students work with talk partner(s). On
a piece of paper students write the alphabet (A-Z) down the left-
hand margin. When ready, students are given a set time depending
on level of students to write a noun for each letter of the alphabet.
They get 1 mark for each correct countable noun and 2 marks for
each correct uncountable noun. When ready, collect responses and
students add up their marks.
LESSON DELIVERY Countable and uncountable nouns (Students Book page 23)
1.Students give example of countable and uncountable noun.
Students read through the example and pay attention to the words
in bold. Students are explained that some nouns can be either
countable or uncountable but with a different meaning. Students
refer to Grammar reference (pp 158-159). Students are asked to
find examples of countable and uncountable noun in the text.
Students come up with their own examples.
POST LESSON Students work with their talk partner(s) and come up with six
sentences using quantifiers. Students make three sentences where
they use the quantifiers correctly and three where the quantifiers
are incorrect. Students swap sentences with another pair and
correct the mistakes. Students share some of the responses with
the class.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON An activity is devised to elicit students’ prior knowledge of Harry


Potter. Alternatively, if students are not familiar with Harry Potter,
use a popular character from a Malaysian Adventure / action story.

1.Students asked to look at the picture and tell what is shown.

Students think of unusual facts that others might not know. Once
they are sure they know the correct answer, they turn the fact into

shop? How do Hogwarts’ students receive letters? When students
are ready, collect the questions and hold a Harry Potter trivia quiz.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students activate prior knowledge in this lesson by writing on the
board: fire-fighter, politician, football player, librarian, flight
attendant. Students asked to work with their talk partner(s) to
come up with a list of characteristics that a person from each
profession should have and why, i.e., a footballer needs to be fit
because he/she needs to run around the football pitch a lot. When
ready, collect responses.
LESSON DELIVERY Students look at the pictures and read the accompanying captions.
Students read through phrases in the boxes and their
understanding is checked. Some of the phrases are pointed out that
they can be used to describe more than one profession. Students
pay attentions to the TIPS. The class divided into small groups.
Students do the activity and some groups are chosen to report
their answers to the class.
POST LESSON Students play the hot air balloon game. The class are divided into
groups of 4-6. Each student chooses a different profession from the
lesson. Students are explained that they are all in a hot air balloon
but the balloon is going down so one person must leave. Each
student takes it in turn to explain why their profession is the most
important and therefore why they must remain in the balloon.
Once everyone has spoken, everybody in the balloon votes for who
should leave.

come up with somebody famous that they admire. Why do they
admire this person? What have they achieved? What
characteristics does that person possess that helped them to
achieve what they have? When ready, collect responses.

1.Students asked to read through the rubric of the writing task and
underline the keywords/ phrases in it. The answers are elicited.

1.Students look at the picture accompanying the text and tell who
they think this man is. Students asked to read through the
description and underline any unknown words at the same time.

understanding are checked. Students do the activity and the

1.Students read through the sentences 1-3. They should think of an
appropriate example to support the opinion about a person’s
personality expressed in each sentence. Students do the activity.
Some students are chosen to read out their examples.

1.Students asked to read through the plan and they are given
necessary explanations about the structure of a description of a
person. Students are explained what each paragraph of the main
part should be about. Students pay attention to the fact that they
should provide example to support their opinion about the
person’s personality. Students write their descriptions according
to the given plan. Some students are chosen to read out their
descriptions.
POST LESSON Students play Guess Who in small groups. One student thinks of a
job and describes the characteristics they need for the job. Other
members of the group guess which job the student is thinking of.

LESSON DELIVERY 1.Students are asked to look at the picture and read through the
headline and tell what it is about. Students look at the layout of the
text and they tell what it is and where it can be found. Student read
through the article and underline any unknown words at the same
time. Unknown words are explained.
2.Students divided into pairs and they asked to read through the
instructions. They provided with any necessary explanations.
Students do the activity and some pairs are chosen to act out the
dialogue in class.
POST LESSON Students do a hot seat activity. One volunteer is asked to take on
the role of the driver. They must answer the questions in character
of the driver. The rest of the class take turns to ask the driver
questions i.e., how long have you been a train driver? Volunteer
uses imagination to give appropriate answers. A new volunteer is
asked to take on the role of a passenger or eyewitness.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students are asked for examples of thriller stories they are familiar
with and brainstorming the typical features of the thriller genre.
With talk partner(s) students are given one minute to write words
connected with the thriller genre. Collect responses (i.e., suspense,
thrill, excitement, scare, danger, action, anticipation, anxiety,
surprise).
LESSON DELIVERY Activity B (Student Book page 32)
1.STudnets read through the writing task and their understanding
are checked. Students look at the pictures and guess what the story
is about. Students read through the story and their predictions are
checked. Students are asked some comprehension questions. Any
unknown words are explained.
Student asked to read through the questions and point out to them
that they should justify their answers whenever possible by
underlining words/phrases in the story. Students do the activity
and the answers checked with the class.

1.Students asked to read through the plan and any necessary
explanations about the structure of a story and the different parts
of it are given.
2.Students pay attention to the TIPS and read through the writing
task and their understanding are checked. Students are given some
times to write their stories. Some students are chosen to read out
their stories.

partner(s) to come up with an exciting opening line to a thriller
story which immediately catches the reader’s interest. Collect
