Re: Request for Investigation into Conduct of Rep. Jean Schmidt CR-OH)
Dear Assistant Director McJunkin:
Enclosed please find a copy of a request for investigation of Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH)
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington ("CREW") filed today with the Office of
Congressional Ethics ("OCE"). CREW respectfully requests that the Federal Bureau of
Investigation ("FBI") commence an investigation into whether Rep. Schmidt violated federal law
by lying to OCE and the House Ethics Committee during previous investigations of her acceptance
of free legal services and her failure to report those services as gifts on her personal financial
disclosure statements.
CREW further requests that the FBI investigate the original allegation that Rep. Schmidt
violated federal law by failing to report nearly $500,000 in free legal services as gifts on her
personal financial disclosure statements. The House Ethics Committee concluded the
congresswoman violated the Ethics in Government Act by improperly failing to report the gifts,
but decided not to sanction her, based in part on several of her statements that do not appear to be
true.

As a result, a criminal inquiry into the appears warranted.
