Candle Magick
Candle magic is simply the use of candles in spell and ritual work. People have been using candles in spiritual and
th
religious ceremonies for centuries. Candles became commercially available during the 19 century making them
readily available to more people. There are various ways people have used candles for magical purpose.
Candles can enhance any magical work. They can be offered to a Goddess or God on an altar, lit in a prayer for
healing for a loved one or used in ritual.
Any type of candle can be used in candle magic the most common candles used are taper or hand-dipped candles,
novena or seven day candles, jumbo candles and figural candles.
7-Day Candles
How long the candle actually burns depends on the candle quality and the spell.
Spellworkers use signs and symbols from the candle burning to divine how well
the spell is or is not working. So the length of time a candle burns or how hot or
cool the candle burns can give insight into your spellwork.
These candles can be inscribed with words or symbols across the top and
dressed with herbs and oils for spell work. They can also be decorated on the
outside glass with images, photos, words and sigils and other symbols. Images
can be pasted to the outside glass or you can paint directly on the glass.
You may have heard the term setting lights, or lights set. Setting alight is simply
the act of writing a spell or magical candle. Setting alight is an old-time term used
in hoodoo and conjure when someone lights a candle for the purpose of
influencing a situation.
Clean and cleanse these candles using Florida Water, floral water, lemon juice,
whiskey, etc. to get the physical and spiritual dirt off the candle.
