Candle Magick
Candle magic is simply the use of candles in spell and ritual work. People have been using candles in spiritual and
th
religious ceremonies for centuries. Candles became commercially available during the 19 century making them
readily available to more people. There are various ways people have used candles for magical purpose.

Candles can enhance any magical work. They can be offered to a Goddess or God on an altar, lit in a prayer for
healing for a loved one or used in ritual.

Any type of candle can be used in candle magic the most common candles used are taper or hand-dipped candles,
novena or seven day candles, jumbo candles and figural candles.

7-Day Candles
How long the candle actually burns depends on the candle quality and the spell.
Spellworkers use signs and symbols from the candle burning to divine how well
the spell is or is not working. So the length of time a candle burns or how hot or
cool the candle burns can give insight into your spellwork.

These candles can be inscribed with words or symbols across the top and
dressed with herbs and oils for spell work. They can also be decorated on the
outside glass with images, photos, words and sigils and other symbols. Images
can be pasted to the outside glass or you can paint directly on the glass.

You may have heard the term setting lights, or lights set. Setting alight is simply
the act of writing a spell or magical candle. Setting alight is an old-time term used
in hoodoo and conjure when someone lights a candle for the purpose of
influencing a situation.

Clean and cleanse these candles using Florida Water, floral water, lemon juice,
whiskey, etc. to get the physical and spiritual dirt off the candle.

Candle Signs & Symbols

During and after the candle burning signs and symbols may be interpreted by how the candle burns:
 Uneven/Unbalanced (wax build-up on one side) – in balance in the situation, more work needs to be done.
The elemental direction of the build-up can lend insight as well.
 Large/Hot or Small/Cool Flame - a high hot flame can mean that there's too much energy in the spellwork it
may needs the cool down. A low or cool flame can mean that more energy needs to be added to the spell or
to the situation.
 Candle Goes Out – re-light. Re-light and pray. Divination and re-work if necessary.

 Point tip toward you and rub oil from base to tip to draw energy to you.
 Point tip away from you and rub oil from base to tip to repel energy.
 Anoint candle from middle to both ends
 Sprinkle powders/herbs on candle or roll candle in powders/herbs.

How to make your Own Color Candle

Or double Action Candle in a Pinch

Use saved candle shavings/pieces in any color you

choose. Use a black or white taper candle as the base
candle (depending on your intention/purpose).

Make a tinfoil “boat”. Place candle pieces in the boat.

Place on an oven safe pan and heat in oven on the

lowest temperature. Watch it carefully, it will melt fast.

Remove from oven and let cool a few seconds. Add any
herbs and oils you need.

Then roll your base candle in the melted wax/herb/oil

mixture. If the mixture is slightly thick (cooled) it will take
less time and effort to coat the base candle.

Moving Candle Spells

One of the purposes of moving candles during a spell is to symbolize the movement of energy, either moving it
toward you or away from you.

Candle Magick Tips

 Never blow out a spell candle

 Keep a candle snuffer handy
 A homemade candle snuffer can be made by forming tin foil into a bell shape with a handle
 Practice fire safety, snuffing out candles when they can’t be attended is okay
 Stick free-standing candles in a pile of sand or ash to keep them upright - this also helps to
contain the heat
 Use a stick of spaghetti to re-light glass encased candles when the wax is low
 Re-cycle 7-day candle glass – once the candle is done sit glass in a pan of hot water, the
left-over wax will melt, wipe clean with a cloth, clean, cleanse and re-use
 Holidays and changes in the season are a great time to stock up on candles in various colors:
th
Halloween = black, Christmas = red & green, 4 of July = red, white & blue, Autumn = brown & orange
 Need to “heat-up” or quicken a “slow/low flame”? Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon and/or powdered
ginger root on the flame
 Candle wax divination – drip wax into a clear bowl of cool water, read the shapes and symbols
MORE ON THAT IN THE SPIRIT & DIVINATION CLASS!
 Take photos of candle flames and smoke – often images appear in photos that you can’t see with
the naked eye
