Tree Plantation

Systematic planting of trees on a large scale is called tree plantation. Trees are
very important for us and the environment. They act as the lungs of our planet,
absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Trees prevent soil erosion and they
protect us from natural disasters such as storms, floods, cyclones, and droughts.
Trees also prevent air pollution. Trees provide habitat for countless species. Trees
fill a large part of our food shortage by providing fruits and vegetables. They give
us many things like wood, leaves, rubber, aromatics, honey, etc. The wood is used to
make many daily necessities including furniture. A variety of medicines are
prepared from the leaves, roots and bark of the tree. However, there is a
decrease in the number of trees due to deforestation. Some greedy people are
destroying forests by cutting down trees for their selfish gain. The forests do
develop naturally. But forests are chopped down at a rate more than they could
grow. Forests are quickly disappearing. Without trees the balance of the
ecosystem is disrupted. This leads to soil erosion and climatic changes. The global
temperature is gradually rising. It is said that a country needs to have a minimum
of 25% forest land. The amount of forest land in Bangladesh is only 16% of the
total area. A country without trees becomes a desert. Without trees, the
existence of human life, as well as other species on earth, is impossible. So, we
should plant more and more trees. They can be planted along roadsides, around
educational institutions and in any open space. If trees are planted along the banks
of rivers and seas, erosion can be prevented. Trees planted by the streets and in
the parks add to the scenic beauty of the spot. Plantation programs should be
extended to remote areas of the country. We should spread public awareness
about the importance of planting more trees.
