Where are we going?

The fate and failings of
contemporary spirituality
Mariana Caplan

Abstract
This paper takes to task the dumbing-down of spirituality in western culture. No stone is left
unturned and no punches pulled in this self-confessed rant at how spiritual truths and
practices have been misunderstood, misinterpreted and misused – usually to remove any
sense of discipline from spiritual practices and leaving them as sugary pills to comfort our
egos rather than transform our lives. Healthy spirituality requires us to ‘walk the middle road’
without falling into the extremes or into the arms of extremists. Despite the critique, the
author remains optimistic and ends on such a note. Although much of the article may at first
seem cynical about the world of contemporary spirituality, the author is passionate about the
possibility for our culture to grow out of spiritual childishness and adolescence and flourish
into the maturity of spiritual adulthood.
