1. Water flows steadily past a porous flat plate. Flow of a viscous fluid over a flat plate surface results in the
development of a region of reduced velocity adjacent to the surface as seen in the figure. This region of reduced
flow is called Boundary Layer (BL). The boundary layer thickness is 𝛿 and increases in flow direction. At the
leading edge of the plate, section ab, the velocity profile is uniform. Constant suction is applied along porous
section, ad. The velocity profile at section cd is

Evaluate the mass flow rate across section bc. In what direction is this mass flow rate (i.e. towards the porous
plate or away from the plate)? The density of water, 𝜌, is 1000 kg/m3. The width and the length of the plate
are 1.5 m and 2 m, respectively.

2. The devices, which are shown in the figure, are on frictionless wheels. They are only allowed to move in
the x-direction (horizontal) and are initially held stationary. When released, which device will move to the
right and which to the left? Explain your results clearly. Note that the pressure at the inlets and outlets of each
device is atmospheric. The incoming and exiting air flows can be assumed steady and incompressible.

3. Five liters/s of water enter the rotor as shown along the axis of rotation. The cross-sectional area of each of
the three nozzle exits normal to the relative velocity is 18 mm2. The density of water is 1000 kg/m3. How large
is the resisting torque required to hold the rotor stationary when a) 𝜃 = 0° , b) 𝜃 = 30° ,c) 𝜃 = 60° ?
