 What is Title IX and how does it impact you as a student?

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex and gender-based discrimination in education
programs and activities that receive federal funds. This includes harassment and sexual
misconduct as well as sexual violence. Working within the school system for the past several
years, and now being a student myself, I am able to see this law in action from all perspectives.
Before Title IX, women were not treated equally as men in their pursuit of higher education, or
career advancement. By mandating schools treat male and female students the same, Title IX
levels the playing field to treat all equally. Title IX impacts me as a student because it is a
protection for me to feel safe and be treated fairly while getting an education.
