National foreword

This Section of BS 4533 has been prepared under the direction of the Electrical
Illumination Standards Policy Committee and is the English language version of
EN 60 598-2-19 “Luminaires Part 2: Particular requirements Section 19 —
Air-handling luminaires (safety requirements)” together with its
amendment A2:1998, published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical
Standardization (CENELEC). It was derived by that organization from
IEC Publication 598-2-19 (1981) edition 1, with amendment No 1 (1987)
and No 2 (1997), which has a similar title as that of the European Standard. This
Section of BS 4533 supersedes BS 4533-102.19:1982 which is withdrawn.
The CENELEC Common Modifications have been implemented at the
appropriate places in the text of IEC Publication 598-2-19 (1981) edition 1, into
which Amendment No 1 (1987) has been incorporated, and are indicated by a
side line in the margin. The foreword and preface of IEC Publication 598-2-19
(1981) edition 1, the preface of Amendment No 1 (1987), and the deleted parts of
the original IEC text which do not form part of the text of EN 60 598-2-19 have
been quoted in National appendix NA. Annexes designated “normative” are part
of the body of the standard. Annexes designated “informative” are given for
information only. National appendices are designated “informative”.
In 19.1, 19.2, 19.12 and 19.13 where the words “section of Part 2 of
IEC Publication 598”, “section of Part 2” and “section of Publication 598-2” appear
they should be read as “section of BS 4533”. In 19.1 and 19.2 where “Part 1”
appears this should be read as “Part 101”. Where the words “Publication 598-1”
appear they should be read as “BS 4533-101”.
Cross-references. Details of other international publications quoted in this
British Standard are given in Annex ZA. Where there are British Standards
corresponding to these international standards the relationships are given in
National appendix NB.
Product certification. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider
the desirability of third party certification of product conformity with this British
Standard based on testing and continuing surveillance, which may be coupled
with assessment of a supplier’s quality systems against the appropriate Part of
BS 5750.
Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification schemes will be
forwarded by BSI to the Association of Certification Bodies. If a third party
certification scheme does not already exist, users should consider approaching an
appropriate body from the list of Association members.
A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity

from legal obligations.

Appendix A Explanation of ta in respect of air-handling luminaires

“Rated maximum ambient temperature” (symbol: ta) is defined in Sub-clause 1.2.25 of Section 1 of
Publication 598-1 and the definition includes the phrase “under normal conditions”. In the case of an
air-handling luminaire, “normal conditions” depend on the type of air-conditioning system with which the
luminaire is associated, and it is therefore necessary to specify a set of conditions under which ta is to be
measured and to draw attention to the relationship between these conditions and those which may occur
in practice.
The conditions specified in this standard are those associated with static operation, that is when the
luminaire is not handling forced supply or extract air, but permitting normal convection air flow, and
the ta to be marked on the luminaire is the maximum ambient temperature in which the luminaire will
operate under these conditions.
When the luminaire is installed as part of an air conditioning system, however, the ambient temperature
in the vicinity of the luminaire depends on the type and characteristics of the system, and these can be
assessed only by the user.
For this assessment, the temperature should be measured at the mid-point of the cavity in which the
luminaire is to be mounted, with a dummy or static luminaire in position to simulate restrictions which the
luminaire may cause to free flow.
In order to simulate the worst conditions which may arise in forced air-flow systems, the air-circulation
system should be switched off during temperature measurements on systems which either supply cooling
air or extract air at room temperature, and switched on during measurements on systems supplying air
above room temperature.
A luminaire chosen for use in this position should have a ta at least as high as the measured temperature.

Foreword of IEC Publication 598-2-19 (1981) edition 1
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the
National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus
of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
3) In order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees should adopt the text of
the IEC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence between the IEC
recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
Preface of IEC Publication 598-2-19 (1981) edition 1
This publication has been prepared by Sub-Committee 34D: Luminaires, of IEC Technical Committee

19.6 Construction
The following Note to sub-clause 19.6.2 has been deleted.
NOTE Fire hazardous locations: In some countries, ventilation systems are regarded as fire hazardous locations and, in these cases,
it is suggested that the following additional requirements apply:
a) Air-handling luminaires should have a body of metal or other non-combustible material and be so constructed that the
temperature of the body does not exceed 100 °C when the luminaire is tested as described in Sub-clause 19.12. The body may be
provided with apertures, however, if their total area does not exceed 10% of the area of the body.
b) The width of horizontal, upward facing, apertures should not exceed 6 mm and the width of other apertures should
not exceed 10 mm. In addition, the width of the projection in a horizontal plane of upward facing apertures in other planes should
not exceed 6 mm.
For air-handling luminaires with stubs for the connection of ventilation ducts, however, there is no limitation on the width of the
apertures.
c) Components, such as ballasts and connecting devices and through wiring in air-handling luminaires, should be protected by an
enclosure of non-combustible material that gives sufficient protection against the ingress of dust. This enclosure may be part of
the component. This requirement does not apply to lampholders and starter-holders and their connecting devices and for short
conductors connected to them, if the rated current of these components does not exceed 2 A.

19.10 External and internal wiring

The first paragraph of sub-clause 19.10.1, shown below, has been replaced by Common Modification.
19.10.1 Where a flexible cable or cord is used as a means of connection to the supply and is supplied by the
luminaire manufacturer, it shall meet the mechanical and electrical requirements of
IEC Publications 227: Polyvinyl Chloride Insulated Cables of Rated Voltages up to and
Including 450/750 V, and 245: Rubber Insulated Cables of Rated Voltages up to and
Including 450/750 V, and shall be capable of withstanding, without deterioration, the highest temperature
to which it may be exposed under normal conditions of use.

19.12 Endurance tests and thermal test

The first paragraph of sub-clause 19.12.2.1, shown below, has been changed by Common Modification.
19.12.2.1 The luminaire is connected to the supply using the cable provided with the luminaire or using
the cable in accordance with the marking on the luminaire, or if not marked, as specified in the
manufacturer’s instruction sheet. Otherwise p.v.c. cables specified in IEC Publication 227 are used.
