Nokia started out as a paper mill company in 1865 by Engineer Fredrik Idestam at Finland, however

the name nokia was not given to it. Fredrik Idestam started his second mill on the bank of
nokianvirta river, which inspired him to name his company as Nokia.

After 1975 nokia launched world first cellular system and in 1984 it launched the first transportable
phone. In 1987 nokia lost its chairman Kari Kairamo , after that nokia was divided into six units, one
of them was named as nokia mobile phones. From 1990 to 2000 Nokia ruled the mobile market and
became number 1 mobile phone company with peak revenue of 400 billion dollars. In 2008 nokia
introduced its first touch screen mobile phone which was already too late, android version 1.0 was
launched but nokia used its own old software. In 2009 the market was taken over by other
companies. In 2010 Head of microsoft Stephen Elop was named the new CEO of nokia and company
enjoyed a good profit. In 2011 company’s situation was going from bad to worst so announced a
partnership with microsoft and introduced the new window phones and faced a loss of 1.3 billion
euros. As a result company decided to close its oldest factory in finland. Nokia finally announced its
selling to microsoft in september 2013 which was compleated in 2014.

Nokia was unwilling to embrace change and took too long to embrace the smart phone revolution
and tried to compete by simply adding touch screen in its phones and failed to survive in fast
growing world of technology.

As it is said “What goes up must come down.”( Isaac Newton). But it is the fact that nokia remained
a great part of mobile phone's history and that can never be forgotten.
