What are Summaries?
Summaries are brief statements that capture the main points of a longer text. To
write a good summary, you should read the text carefully and identify the main
ideas. Highlight or underline key points, and write a sentence or two that
summarizes each section of the text. Combine the sentences into a paragraph that
captures the essence of the text. Edit the summary to ensure that it is concise and
accurate.

There are two primary types of summaries:

1. Informative summaries are objective reports on the text’s content. They

accurately convey the information contained in a text or other type of
resource. The main types of informative summaries are outlines, abstracts,
and synopses. Outlines present the plan or the “skeleton” of a written
material. Abstracts present the major point of long piece of text or an article.
Synopses are brief overviews of an article, story, book, film, or other works

2. Descriptive summaries depict the original text (material) rather than directly
presenting the information it contains. They portray, in an objective way, the
text’s structure and main themes. Descriptive summaries often play the role
of reviews for fictional or literary works: books, movies, video clips,
articles, essays etc. In this case, the descriptive summary can include
statements about sense and significance of the summarised work
