This document provides an introduction to a course on nanoscience and technology. It discusses different types of nanostructures, including one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional materials. Methods for synthesizing bimetallic nanoparticles are described, such as co-reduction and successive reduction. Finally, metallic nanoparticles are discussed for their use in catalysis, where they can provide an alternative reaction pathway and increase reaction rates, making them efficient, selective, and recyclable green catalysts.

UNIT III: TYPES OF NANOSTRUCTURES Definition of a Nano system – Nanoscale building blocks, Types of Nanocrystals-One Dimensional (1D)-Two Dimensional (2D) -Three Dimensional (3D) nanostructured materials - Quantum dots (OD)- Quantum wire- Core/Shell structures. Synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles Co-reduction method • In this method, two metallic salts are simultaneously reduced in the presence of st abilizer to form the corresponding bimetallic nanoparticles
Successive reduction method
• In this method, a second metal is grown on the surface of pre-formed metal nanop article seeds Metallic Nanoparticles for Catalysis
• Catalysis is found to be one of the major fields of nanoscience and
nanotechnology. In this phenomenon, an alternative pathway was provided by t he catalyst in which the reaction rate is increased.
• Nanoparticle-based catalysts in the aqueous phase is termed as
quasi-homogeneous catalysis and the catalyst as a quasi-homogenous catalyst.
• This field has attracted a great deal of attention because nanoparticle-based
catalysts are efficient, selective, and recyclable and thus can be used as green catalysts.
