Overall result: Merit

Agnieszka Lasko: Tarantella (from Little Stories) 26/30

This was played with an overall appreciation of the Tarantella spirit, though the tempo could
have possessed yet more forward motion, and there was a small pulse stumble in the
middle. Nonetheless, tone was solid and articulation broadly convincing, with evidence of
phrase shaping largely apparent too.

Trad. Chinese: Kangding Love Song, arr. Yip 26/30

There was a steady tempo set in this unhurried account, and effective synchronicity between
the parts. Accuracy levels were high, though there did need to be further expressive shaping
to add interest, and the softer tonal colours could have been explored more fully.
Nonetheless, it was a mostly engaging rendition, with crisp articulation present throuhgout.

David Blackwell: Railroad Blues 27/30

A clear sense of drive was established, allied to snappy articulation and a feel for the bluesy
idiom. Small errors occurred along the way, and there could have been yet more dynamic
shaping, but this was committed and suitably attitude-filled from start to finish. Well done.

Elissa Milne: Mozzie (from Easy Little Peppers) 23/30

The left hand was punchy in articulation, and there was tonal brightness too. However, the
performance stalled near the beginning, with a number of attempts to correct the notes. This
hindered the underlying flow somewhat, but you did recover, and the rest of the account
showed an appreciation of the style, as well as some purposeful rhythmic bounce.

Performance as a whole 24/30

There was a sufficient sense of occasion here, with suitable time taken between each item,
though further outward involvement in the playing was possible. Musical outcomes were
rather mixed, but as a whole performance, there was broad technical stability and largely
convincing stylistic character too, as well as an overall acknowledgment of balance between
the parts and textural variety. The final piece stalled somewhat as the correct notes were
found near the beginning, but the third piece was the highlight, with plenty of well-delivered
musical ideas.
