The Dinner Party
In this teaching activity, students imagine that they went to a dinner party. The students
practice using adjectives to describe the food at the party. They also say whether it was a
good or bad party and give reasons why, using so and because.
Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each student.
Procedure
Explain to the students that they are going to have a dinner party.
Write on the board: Starter / Main Course / Dessert. Brainstorm different dishes for each
course, e.g. starter - chicken soup, etc.
In pairs, tell the students to write what food they will have at their dinner party. The students
should write at least one dish for each course.
Tell the students to imagine that they went to a dinner party and are now going to describe it.
Give each student a copy of the worksheet.
Ask them to look at the pairs of adjectives, which can all be used to describe food. The
students then put each adjective under the correct heading. Some adjectives can go in more
than one box. When they have finished, check the answers as a class.
Next, write these sentences on the board:
The soup was too spicy because they used too much chilli.
The dessert was too sweet, so I didn't eat it.
Highlight the cause and effect in each sentence and then elicit similar sentences using so
and because. Then, have the students complete Exercise 2 and go through the answers.
After that, explain to the students that they are going to write to a friend describing the dinner
party they went to. They say whether it was good or bad and give reasons why, using so and
because.
Students can also refer to the menu they created at the beginning of the activity to help them
write about the food.
When they have finished, ask the students to swap their email with a partner.
Ask them to read the new email and decide whether their partner explains well, why things
were good or bad and gives good reasons.
When they have finished, tell the students to give back their emails and give feedback. The
students can then rewrite any necessary parts.
Students then read their emails to the class.
