COUNTRY BRIEF (OVERVIEW)-ARGENTINA
With a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of more
than US$510 billion, Argentina is one of the
largest economies in Latin America. In recent
years, President Cristina Fernandez’
administration has focused on promoting
economic development with social inclusion.
The country has grown steadily during the past decade and has invested heavily
in health and education, areas which account for 8% and 6% of GDP respectively.
Between 2000 and 2011, the middle class increased from
34% to 53% of the population.
It has prioritized social spending through various programs, including the creation of the Universal Child
Allowance, which reaches approximately 3.7 million children and adolescents up to 18 years old, 9.3% of
the population. The economy's external sector faces significant challenges. Estimates for the first 6
months of 2014 were 0.1% GDP growth compared with 2013 and the forecasts for the whole of 2014
range from -1% to -1.5%. For 2015, around 0.5% is expected.
During the first 6 months, fiscal accounts had a primary surplus of 0.1% of GDP and an overall deficit of
0.9% of GDP. In the first six months of 2014, public sector revenues increased 43% (YOY) and spending
by48% (YOY).

INDIA-ARGENTINA BILATERAL RELATIONS
India-Argentina relations are cordial and encompass political, economic, scientific and technological
cooperation including Antarctic research and cultural cooperation. India opened a Trade Commission in
Buenos Aires in 1943 and later converted it into an embassy in 1949. Argentina had established a
consulate in Calcutta in the 1920s which was transferred to Delhi as an embassy in 1950. Argentina
opened a Consulate General office in Mumbai in April, 2009.
Diversified export basket, dynamic domestic market, preferential access to a regional market at 0%
tariff, great industrial complementariness and opportunities to deepen productive specialization,
strategic location, ties with Latin America all clubbed together, make Argentina an ideal location for
trade and investment,
Introduction
Argentina benefits from rich natural resources, a highly literate population, an export-oriented
agricultural sector, and a diversified industrial base. Although one of the world's wealthiest countries
100 years ago, Argentina suffered during most of the 20th century from recurring economic crises,
persistent fiscal and current account deficits, high inflation, mounting external debt, and capital flight.
The government has taken multiple steps in recent years to deal with these problems. It expanded state
intervention in the economy throughout 2012. In May 2012 the Congress approved the nationalization
of the oil company YPF from Spain's Repsol.
The government expanded formal and informal measures to restrict imports during the year, including a
requirement for pre-registration and pre-approval of all imports. In July 2012, the government also
further tightened currency controls in an effort to bolster foreign reserves and stem capital flight. In
October 2013, the government settled long standing international arbitral disputes dating to before and
following the 2001 Argentine financial crisis. During 2014, the government continued its expansionary
fiscal and monetary policies and foreign exchange and imports controls. Between 2011 and 2013,
Central Bank foreign reserves had dropped $21.3 billion from a high of $52.7 billion. In July 2014,
Argentina and China agreed on an $11 billion currency swap; the Argentine Central Bank has received
the equivalent of $3.2 billion in Chinese yuan, which it counts as international reserves.
