1. Introduction
The rapid growth in the volume and complexity of data in recent decades has given
significant impetus to the development of information technology paradigms. In this context, big
data has emerged as one of the critical elements that are changing the way we understand and utilize
information [15]. By utilizing high computing capabilities, advanced statistical analysis, and
innovative storage technologies, big data not only promises to increase efficiency in various sectors,
but also opens the door to deeper understanding in various disciplines [29].

Recent researches explore and apply the concept of big data from various disciplinary
perspectives. From the analysis of complex medical data to the utilization of big data in the
development of smart cities, the complexity and potential of big data increasingly demands the
integration of multidisciplinary approaches [4][11][30]. To detail and illustrate the research progress
in various aspects of big data from different disciplines, a thorough and in-depth systematic
literature review is required.
By detailing the contributions of various disciplines in the development of the big data
concept, this literature review is expected to be a valuable guide for researchers, practitioners and
policy makers interested in further exploration of the potential of big data in a multidisciplinary
context. It is therefore a critical first step to identify, evaluate and synthesize current research in this
domain to form a solid and informed understanding of the contributions of big data in a
multidisciplinary context.
2. Research Methodology
The detailed steps of the PRISMA Method are used to identify, assess and combine
relevant scientific literature, thus creating a solid and structured research framework. In
following this method, emphasis is placed on careful steps, such as the formulation of clear
research questions, identification of relevant sources of information, assessment of the quality
and relevance of the literature, and systematic data analysis and synthesis.
This research dedicates special attention to describing the contribution of each of the
selected systematic works. By highlighting the key findings, methodologies used, and unique
contributions of each study, this research aims to provide in-depth insights into the evolution of
knowledge of multidisciplinary perspectives on Big Data. Through this approach, it is expected
that this systematic literature review can make a significant contribution to the understanding
and development of knowledge in the field of Big Data utilization from various
multidisciplinary perspectives.
a) How has knowledge regarding the utilization of Big Data in business operations evolved
from a multidisciplinary perspective, and what are the main contributions from different
disciplines?
3
Sensors 2008, 8
b) To what extent does the implementation of Big Data in business strategic policies affect
business decision-making, and how is this impact reflected in the related literature?
c) What are the positive and negative impacts identified in the literature regarding the
utilization of Big Data, and how does this reflect the adaptation of businesses to the
digital revolution from a multidisciplinary perspective?
Furthermore, in the data collection stage, this research utilizes three main online
databases, namely Scopus, Google Scholar, and Pubmed. These databases store scientific and
empirical studies from various fields such as Business Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, Big
Data Analytics IoT, Information Technology and Data Analytics. The search process begins by
formulating a keyword search string using the search facility available in each database, with
predefined exclusive command settings.
Searching using these keywords produced a number of articles which were then
filtered to remove duplicates. In this case, the authors found 200 articles on Google Scholar and
200 articles on Scopus, with 20 duplicates that needed to be filtered out. This process
demonstrates a commitment to quality and rigor in the collection of relevant literature for this
study.
By systematically applying the PRISMA Method, this research aims to make a
significant contribution to the understanding of the utilization of Big Data in modern business.
As such, this methodology not only guides this research but can also provide a strong
foundation for future research in this domain.
.
This is the stage where the author filters with certain criteria so that the selected
articles are more specific and lead to the research question. First, the authors selected journal
articles that were quantitative studies only, while articles consisting of book chapters, seminar
articles, and proceedings, as well as literature review articles were excluded. Secondly, the
authors only selected English-language articles and those related to the fields of religion,
philosophy, arts and humanities, social sciences, and multidisciplinarity. Third, in terms of time
period, the authors did not limit themselves to a specific time period for the search in the main
database and limited the search to the years 2010 to 2023 in the supporting database. This is
because when the initial screening was conducted, the author found that writing related to this
field began around 1998 worldwide (see Table 2). After the screening process, out of 410
articles, the authors excluded 360 articles, and selected only 28 articles. Although the excluded
4
Sensors 2008, 8
articles were not included in the research analysis, some articles were used as additional
references.
At this stage, the author only focuses on articles that discuss big data from the perspective
of big data applications. The 50 articles were analyzed by doing an in-depth reading starting from
the abstract and the whole article to find out the views of existing studies. From the analysis
process, only twenty-eight (28) articles were found that lead to the discussion of big data
applicationsbased on existing research. The entire process of selecting articles for the systematic
literature review (SLR) is shown and explained through the PRISMA flow chart in Figure 1
below.

4. Discussion
The integration of Big Data and artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is making a
significant positive impact. High-performance medicine approaches, through the convergence
of human and AI [3], provide rapid interpretation of medical images, improve clinical
workflows, and empower patients to process their own health data. The application of big data
and machine learning algorithms in healthcare delivery [5] provides advantages of flexibility
and scalability, although challenges related to clinical implementation and ethics need to be
addressed. The adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in healthcare [7] has revolutionized the
way traditional services and products are provided, with significant benefits and
cross-disciplinary challenges. Furthermore, IoT-based health big data storage systems with
adaptive access control [20] provide effective and efficient security solutions. Amid the
COVID-19 pandemic, the utilization of AI and Big Data in health information management
[22] has become a vital instrument in global surveillance, prediction, and decision-making. All
of which highlights the great potential and challenges of integrating Big Data and artificial
intelligence in healthcare transformation.
In the context of technological advances, the focus on analytics, cloud computing, and
innovative platforms provides important insights. Google Earth Engine (GEE) as a cloud-based
geospatial processing platform [6] provides access to petabytes of remote monitoring imagery
and off-the-shelf products, enabling users to analyze and visualize geospatial big data without
the need for supercomputing. Complementarily, a comprehensive study of GEE [8] reveals its
wide utilization, especially in applications such as soil classification, hydrology, and image
processing. Meanwhile, a survey on data collection for machine learning [10] highlighted
important challenges in data acquisition, labeling, and repair related to the development of deep
learning techniques. Similarly, big data service architecture [11] provides an in-depth look at
the integration of big data in a new economic service architecture that generates economic
benefits and efficient data processing strategies. Finally, the design of big data architecture for
edge-cloud computing [21] shows a step forward in solving the challenges of big data
8

processing in IoT environments, offering effective and efficient solutions for storing,
processing, and analyzing data at the network edge. Overall, this research underscores the
important role of technology in meeting the big challenges of big data processing and analysis.
4.3 Applications Across Domains: Transportation, Industrial IoT, and Smart Homes
4.4 Cross-Disciplinary Impact: Human Biology, Social Media, and Emotional Understanding
5. Conclusion
In sectors such as intelligent transportation, IoT for cloud-edge computing, and data analytics
in Smart Homes, Big Data applications are proving to have a major impact in improving safety,
efficiency, and sustainability. However, challenges such as clinical implementation in healthcare and
the complexity of IoT data processing still need to be addressed.
