The painting "The Raising of the Cross" by Peter Paul Rubens caught the attention of an art gallery judge for its highly detailed and dark setting that fits the subject of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The painting depicts the cross, soldiers, horses, bodies, and a pained Jesus being raised on the cross, illustrating this important event in a way that reminds viewers of the importance of their actions and words. The judge believes the painting deserves to win the art exhibit for both its majestic visuals and meaningful representation of the sacrifice of the savior.

As the judge of an art gallery exhibit this specific artwork has
really caught my attention. The painting itself is very detailed. I’m quite amazed by its setting that is dark and restless which is totally fit for its subject. For a subject like this that has happened ages ago, the dark setting really suits it. Although the setting is quite dark, the subjects are still visible and elaborate. We can see the cross, soldiers, horses, bodies, and Jesus Christ. Aside from the visual illustration itself, is the meaning of the painting. Out of all the possible subject that Rubens can choose, he chose to emphasize the importance of our savior. He chose to paint a scene that is very important in the life of Jesus Christ. We can see the pain in Jesus’ face as he was being crucified and raised. The pain that we can see is a reminder for all of us to be more careful with our actions and the words that we let go. The Raising of the Cross by Peter Paul Rubens deserves to win this art gallery exhibit not only for its majestic visuals but for its meaning as well. Danielle Gail N. Trazo 9 – B
