MONTHLY RETAINERS
Working with a client every month is a great way to build a consistent income. It
will take a bit of pressure off for always having to find your next paycheck. A
monthly retainer is an idea you might float to the brand after completing a job,
and you loved working with the client. If you have a few ideas for video concepts
or you'll be travelling, I'd ask the brand what new content they're looking for if
they're dropping any new products and offer to create content for them for the
next few months. Be careful not to get locked into a long term contract at a set
price. As you grow, you'll want to increase your prices as your costs increase, and
the last thing you want is to get paid the same rate you did the previous year.

DIGITAL PRODUCTS
Digital products are a great revenue stream. Think of when you take your time to
create an amazing high-quality video and post it online—the engagement and
views compound over time. It's just like when you create a digital product; you're
creating an asset that will pay you for months/ years to come.

Now, you don't have to create a digital product about filmmaking. You can use the
skills that you've acquired as a content creator to create a high-quality product in
another area of interest that you're passionate about.

LICENSING FOOTAGE
There are 2 ways of doing this. One would be to upload your footage to a stock
footage website. We don't personally upload our footage to a stock website, but
it's a great way to bring in income. People are making 6-figures doing this. To be
successful with it, expect to upload hundreds of clips, tagging each one so people
can find your videos. The site you're hosting the footage on will typically taking 50-
70% of the revenue. Another way is when you have a good body of work online;
brands may come to you to licence specific clips from your videos.
When they do this, consider the following and make sure to ask them:
The longer they want to use the footage for and the more platforms they want to
use it on will increase your price. Like we mentioned in the video about pricing
your work, ask the client if they have a budget range set aside for the licensing.
Alternatively, start at a higher price and work your way down.

They don't always have access to an amazing video editor to produce high-
quality content. That's where you come in! You can act as the editor for your
clients while they handle all of the production and shooting. I know the
excitement of shooting and bringing your creative vision to life is one of the
best parts of being a filmmaker. However, if you can add a few clients on a
monthly retainer to your revenue stack as an editor, it can be very lucrative for
your business.
They'll want to get their product in front of as many customers as possible. You
can offer them your skills as a filmmaker to create exceptional marketing
assets and promote their business in exchange for equity in the company.
It won't pay you right away, but you also want to build your long term revenue
streams that have the potential to pay you large lump sums in years to come.
