Hydraulic Design of Barrage

• Design for sub-surface flow

It is done through Khosla,s method. Safety against
piping is achieved by maintaining a safe exit
gradient.
• Design for surface flow
The maximum uplift pressure will occur when there
is water at pond level and no water is flowing down
the barrage. However for flood flow of water over
the barrage, entirely new conditions are
superimposed. The formation of hydraulic jump
results in development of uplift pressure in the jump
trough which may be greater than that under steady
seepage conditions..

Hydraulic Design of Barrage
• Scour considerations:
Sheet piles at the ends must go below the deepest
anticipated scour depth.

• Length of the concrete floor:

The total floor length is provided on the basis of
safe exit gradient.
However a length of 5(y2-y1) is provided after
the lowest point of jump formation that i.e. the
toe of the glacis.
