OR

Give the character sketch of the lady in red. How did she outwit Horace Danby.

Ans: Both Horace Danby and the lady in red were thieves. But the lady in red was smarter than Horace
Danby in theft. Horace Danby was about fifty years old and an unmarried person. He used to make locks
and was fairly successful at his business. He was good and respectable but not completely honest. He
would rob a safe every year need money to buy books of his interest. Like a professional thief he made a
lot of preparations ,to rob a safe. He worked hard to find out the necessary details about the location of
the house at Shotover Grange and the position of the key and the safe. He studied the rooms of the
house, its electric wiring and its gardens in detail. He attempted theft when the servants of the house
were out to watch the movies.

In spite of all his plannings, he could not judge that the lady in red was also a thief. The lady behave in
such a way that Horace took her as the owner of the house. There was confidence and authority in her
voice. He was made to believe that he was working for the lady of the house but she wanted to steal
the jewels. Her personality, confidence and her gestures made him believe that she was the owner of
the house. She convinced him that she needed those jewels to wear in the party that night. She made
him open the safe without wearing his gloves. He was completely trapped by her. She closed all doors of
his escape by saying that she could get him arrested if he did not follow her orders. She blackmailed him
to grab the jewels and decamped with the them whereas Horace was sent to prison. So the lady in red
was witty, crafty and smarter than Horace.
