Books and television

The world around us is developing all the time and as a consequence of this it becomes more
digitalized.
However old, traditional habits still play an important role in our society. Let’s take the example of
books. Although there are other communication devices such as TV or internet, books still fill in a
significant role in our life.

They say that “When you open a book, you open a new world”. Books are packed with knowledge,
insights into a happy life, life lessons, love, fear, prayer and helpful advice. One can read about
anything under the sun. Books have been here for centuries and without them today’s knowledge
of our past ancestors, cultures and civilizations would have been impossible. Have you ever
thought what would have happened if intellectuals never documented their studies?
Through reading, you expose yourself to new things, new information, new ideas, new ways to
solve a problem, and new ways to achieve a goal.
It helps you understand the world more and find the truth about something. It also helps to keep
your memory sharp and improve your imagination. On top of that it is a good way to entertain
yourself, because with a good book time flies.

However some people think that the new devices will overshadow the role and importance of
books. Surveys also show that people rather watch TV at the end of the day tha reading a good
book. But can these new technical inventions replace the well-tried, conventional books?

TV is a the greatest achievements of the twentieth century and it become a major industry in the
world. Families were glued tot he screen watching interesting shows, films, sport events and other
programmes. Viewers could witness milestone events, for example the Apollo 11 landing ont he
moon. It informed and united people and it became the part of the family. Nowdays almost all the
people in the world have TV in their households and every day more and more people tend to sit
before it.

However it has not just advantages but it also has harmful effects as well.
On the one hand you can reach all kind of informations. You don’t even have to step out your
home to find out about the latest news. It also provides you chance to enjoy entertaining
programmes. By touching its button and by searching different channels, it gives us benefits and
solutions to our challenges in the modern-faced world. This includes receiving reports from local
and world events, to inspire young minds by exploring geography and history, watch a fantasy,
and to entertain us. Television also tends to escape from the reality, which gives us a temporary
relief from our problems in life or when we feel depressed.

But on the other hand it has a negative impact on society and I must say that children are the ones
who suffer the most in the long run. Statistics shows that a lot of children have become couch
potatoes, put on a lot of weight, neglect their studies and become anti-social, as they used to
spend most of their they before the TV.
In addition it is also shows a lot of violent and aggressive proggrames and bad role models, which
has a negative impact on people’s personality and it also causes obesity.
Furthermore we can also say that TV is not always reliable due to the fastness of the flow of
informations.

To sum up, I think the modern gadgets such as TV can’t replace the role of books. A book
communicates knowledge, and not only knowledge but wisdom of all kinds. They say that “The
more you read, the more well-read you are”. In simple terms what this means is that the more you
read the more exposed you are, your attitudes, your ideas and your imagination changes. I believe
that my personality, behaviour, ideas and knowledge are all built on the books I have read.
Nothing can add to our intellect more than reading a book. Not even television.
