GENERAL RULES ON LAYING COVERS

"Laying covers" generally refers to setting a table, including arranging the tableware and
accessories in a specific manner. Here are some general rules to follow when laying covers for a
formal dining setting:

 The dinner plate is centered about an inch from the edge of the table, aligned with the bottom of
the tableware.

 Forks are placed to the left of the plate, and knives and spoons to the right. The fork is generally
placed on the leftmost side, followed by the knife and then the spoon.
 The blade of the knife should face the plate, and the cutting edge of the knife should face inward.
 The dessert spoon and fork can be placed horizontally above the dinner plate or brought out later
with dessert.

 Glasses are arranged above and to the right of the plate. The water glass is placed directly above
the knife. Additional glasses for wine or other beverages are arranged to the right.

 The napkin can be placed either to the left of the forks or on the center of the dinner plate.
Alternatively, it can be creatively folded and placed within the water glass.

 If bread is served, a bread plate is placed above and to the left of the forks, with a butter knife
resting diagonally across the plate.

 If assigned seating is being used, a place card with the guest's name may be placed above the
dinner plate. Alternatively, a menu card can be placed on top of the dinner plate.

 Ensure that all items are aligned properly. The edges of the dinner plate, the flatware, and the
glasses should form a straight line.

 Use clean and neatly pressed tablecloths and napkins. The color and style can be chosen to
match the overall theme or decor of the event.

 If a centerpiece is used, ensure it is not too tall, obstructing the view of guests across the table. It
should complement the overall table setting.

 Arrange the table in a way that complements the flow of the meal, ensuring that necessary
utensils are in place for each course.
